What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

In Gath, David answers a song about tens of thousands by scratching on gate doors and letting saliva run down his beard—and Achish objects chiefly that he has enough madmen already.

Bread, and one rather famous swordvv. 1–9

David came to Nob alone, which made Ahimelech tremble before a word had properly got under way. David said the king’s mission was secret and urgent, then asked for bread: the ordinary sort was absent, but the consecrated Bread of the Presence was available, freshly replaced with hot bread on the very day it had been removed. Ahimelech gave it to him. Doeg the Edomite was there, detained before the LORD, and David also requested a weapon. The only one was Goliath’s sword, wrapped behind the ephod; David accepted it with the brisk verdict, “There is none like it.”

The celebrated madman of Gathvv. 10–15

David fled from Saul to Gath, carrying Goliath’s sword into the city of Goliath’s people. Achish’s servants recognised him by the old dance-song about Saul’s thousands and David’s tens of thousands. David took this badly, and performed madness with remarkable commitment: he scratched on the doors of the gate and let his saliva run down his beard. Achish, told that the man was insane, wondered why anyone had brought him in at all. The king’s objection was not that David was too dangerous, but that his household had no particular need of madmen.

  1. 1 Sam 21:1Then David came to Nob, to Ahimelech the priest. And when Ahimelech met David, he trembled and asked him, “Why are you alone? Why is no one with you?”

  2. 1 Sam 21:2“The king has given me a mission,” David replied. “He told me no one is to know about the mission on which I am sending you. And I have directed my young men to meet me at a certain place.

  3. 1 Sam 21:3Now then, what do you have on hand? Give me five loaves of bread, or whatever can be found.”

  4. 1 Sam 21:4“There is no common bread on hand,” the priest replied, “but there is some consecrated bread—provided that the young men have kept themselves from women.”

  5. 1 Sam 21:5David answered, “Women have indeed been kept from us, as is usual when I set out. And the bodies of the young men are holy even on common missions. How much more so today!”

  6. 1 Sam 21:6So the priest gave him the consecrated bread, since there was no bread there but the Bread of the Presence, which had been removed from before the LORD and replaced with hot bread on the day it was taken away.

  7. 1 Sam 21:7Now one of Saul’s servants was there that day, detained before the LORD. And his name was Doeg the Edomite, the chief shepherd for Saul.

  8. 1 Sam 21:8Then David asked Ahimelech, “Is there not a spear or sword on hand here? For I have brought neither my sword nor my weapons with me, because the king’s mission was urgent.”

  9. 1 Sam 21:9The priest replied, “The sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom you killed in the Valley of Elah, is here; it is wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod. If you want, you may take it. For there is no other but this one here.” And David said, “There is none like it; give it to me.”

  10. 1 Sam 21:10That day David fled from Saul and went to Achish king of Gath.

  11. 1 Sam 21:11But the servants of Achish said to him, “Is this not David, the king of the land? Did they not sing about him in their dances, saying: ‘Saul has slain his thousands, and David his tens of thousands’?”

  12. 1 Sam 21:12Now David took these words to heart and was very much afraid of Achish the king of Gath.

  13. 1 Sam 21:13So he changed his behavior before them and feigned madness in their hands; he scratched on the doors of the gate and let his saliva run down his beard.

  14. 1 Sam 21:14Then Achish said to his servants, “Look, you can see that the man is insane! Why have you brought him to me?

  15. 1 Sam 21:15Am I in need of madmen, that you have brought this man to rave in my presence? Must this man come into my house?”

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
