The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

Peter diagnoses forgetfulness as a kind of blindness, then prepares to dismantle the tent of his body.

A ladder of qualitiesvv. 1–11

Peter writes to people who share a faith as precious as his, and sets out a curious chain of additions: faith takes on virtue, virtue knowledge, knowledge self-control, and so on until love. The person who lacks these qualities is not merely forgetful but “nearsighted to the point of blindness,” having misplaced the memory of being cleansed. The promised destination is a lavish reception into the eternal kingdom of Jesus Christ.

The tent and the mountainvv. 12–18

Peter intends to keep reminding them, although they already know these things, because his life is a tent that will soon be laid aside. He promises to make provision for their memory after his departure, then turns from the approaching dismantling to a scene he says was no cleverly devised fable: he and others were eyewitnesses of Jesus’ majesty. On the holy mountain, they heard a voice from heaven give Jesus honour and glory.

The lamp and the voicevv. 19–21

Peter places the prophets beside that witnessed voice, describing their word as a lamp shining in a dark place until dawn and the morning star rises in hearts. He then gives prophecy a double boundary: it does not come from a person’s own interpretation, and it was not brought forth by human will. Men spoke from God as the Holy Spirit carried them along—a remarkably nautical finish to the chapter’s argument about where words come from.

  1. 2 Pet 1:1Simon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who through the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ have received a faith as precious as ours:

  2. 2 Pet 1:2Grace and peace be multiplied to you through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.

  3. 2 Pet 1:3His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through the knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence.

  4. 2 Pet 1:4Through these He has given us His precious and magnificent promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, now that you have escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.

  5. 2 Pet 1:5For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith virtue; and to virtue, knowledge;

  6. 2 Pet 1:6and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness;

  7. 2 Pet 1:7and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love.

  8. 2 Pet 1:8For if you possess these qualities and continue to grow in them, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  9. 2 Pet 1:9But whoever lacks these traits is nearsighted to the point of blindness, having forgotten that he has been cleansed from his past sins.

  10. 2 Pet 1:10Therefore, brothers, strive to make your calling and election sure. For if you practice these things you will never stumble,

  11. 2 Pet 1:11and you will receive a lavish reception into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

  12. 2 Pet 1:12Therefore I will always remind you of these things, even though you know them and are established in the truth you now have.

  13. 2 Pet 1:13I think it is right to refresh your memory as long as I live in the tent of my body,

  14. 2 Pet 1:14because I know that this tent will soon be laid aside, as our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me.

  15. 2 Pet 1:15And I will make every effort to ensure that after my departure, you will be able to recall these things at all times.

  16. 2 Pet 1:16For we did not follow cleverly devised fables when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of His majesty.

  17. 2 Pet 1:17For He received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice came to Him from the Majestic Glory, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”

  18. 2 Pet 1:18And we ourselves heard this voice from heaven when we were with Him on the holy mountain.

  19. 2 Pet 1:19We also have the word of the prophets as confirmed beyond doubt. And you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.

  20. 2 Pet 1:20Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture comes from one’s own interpretation.

  21. 2 Pet 1:21For no such prophecy was ever brought forth by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
