At Cana, the banquet master praises the bridegroom for a splendid last-minute wine decision, while the servants alone know that the wine began life in water jars.
The wine that arrived from nowherevv. 1–12
A wedding at Cana in Galilee runs out of wine, which is the sort of small disaster capable of becoming the whole evening. Jesus’ mother mentions it; Jesus gives the servants an instruction; and six purification jars, filled to the brim with water, become the source of the finest wine. The master of the banquet, who has not seen the trick, summons the bridegroom and congratulates him on an unusually daring order of service. The servants know better, and Jesus’ disciples see in the sign something that makes them believe in Him. Afterward Jesus goes down to Capernaum with His mother, brothers, and disciples, where they stay a few days.
Forty-six years and three daysvv. 13–22
At Passover in Jerusalem, Jesus finds the temple courts occupied by livestock sellers and money changers. He makes a whip of cords, drives out the animals and their dealers, scatters the coins, overturns tables, and tells the dove sellers to clear out. When the Jews demand a sign for such authority, Jesus answers with a sentence about destroying the temple and raising it in three days. They answer with the building schedule: forty-six years. The narrator supplies the missing turn—Jesus was speaking about the temple of His body—and the disciples only understand the saying after He was raised from the dead.
Belief without an introductionvv. 23–25
During the feast, many people see the signs Jesus is doing and believe in His name. Jesus, however, does not entrust Himself to them. The chapter leaves those two movements side by side: their belief comes from what they see, while His knowledge reaches what is in a man. No testimony is required, because Jesus already knows them all.

John 2:1On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there,
John 2:2and Jesus and His disciples had also been invited to the wedding.
John 2:3When the wine ran out, Jesus’ mother said to Him, “They have no more wine.”
John 2:4“Woman, what is that to you and to Me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.”
John 2:5His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever He tells you.”
John 2:6Now six stone water jars had been set there for the Jewish rites of purification. Each could hold from twenty to thirty gallons.
John 2:7Jesus told the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” So they filled them to the brim.
John 2:8“Now draw some out,” He said, “and take it to the master of the banquet.” They did so,
John 2:9and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not know where it was from, but the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside
John 2:10and said, “Everyone serves the fine wine first, and then the cheap wine after the guests are drunk. But you have saved the fine wine until now!”
John 2:11Jesus performed this, the first of His signs, at Cana in Galilee. He thus revealed His glory, and His disciples believed in Him.
John 2:12After this, He went down to Capernaum with His mother and brothers and His disciples, and they stayed there a few days.
John 2:13When the Jewish Passover was near, Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
John 2:14In the temple courts He found men selling cattle, sheep, and doves, and money changers seated at their tables.
John 2:15So He made a whip out of cords and drove all from the temple courts, both sheep and cattle. He poured out the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables.
John 2:16To those selling doves He said, “Get these out of here! How dare you turn My Father’s house into a marketplace!”
John 2:17His disciples remembered that it is written: “Zeal for Your house will consume Me.”
John 2:18On account of this, the Jews demanded, “What sign can You show us to prove Your authority to do these things?”
John 2:19Jesus answered, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up again.”
John 2:20“This temple took forty-six years to build,” the Jews replied, “and You are going to raise it up in three days?”
John 2:21But Jesus was speaking about the temple of His body.
John 2:22After He was raised from the dead, His disciples remembered that He had said this. Then they believed the Scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken.
John 2:23While He was in Jerusalem at the Passover Feast, many people saw the signs He was doing and believed in His name.
John 2:24But Jesus did not entrust Himself to them, for He knew them all.
John 2:25He did not need any testimony about man, for He knew what was in a man.

Who else the chapter reaches
Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.
Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.
Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
