What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

Jesus sternly told two healed blind men to keep quiet, and they promptly spread the news about Him throughout the land.

A mat, a meal, and some new wineskinsvv. 1–17

Jesus crosses over to His own town, where friends bring a paralytic on a mat. He forgives the man first, which alarms the scribes, then settles the question rather briskly: the man is told to get up, pick up his mat, and go home—and does exactly that. Soon Jesus is calling Matthew from his tax booth and dining at his house with tax collectors and sinners, to the Pharisees’ evident displeasure. John’s disciples then ask about fasting, and Jesus answers with a bridegroom, a torn garment, and wine that has very firm opinions about old wineskins.

The house where laughter changed its mindvv. 18–34

A synagogue leader kneels and asks Jesus to come to his dead daughter. On the way, a woman who has suffered bleeding for twelve years touches the fringe of His cloak and is healed. At the leader’s house, flute players and a noisy crowd laugh when Jesus says the girl is asleep; the crowd is put outside, and the girl gets up. Two blind men follow Jesus into a house, receive their sight, and are sternly told not to let anyone know. They spread the news throughout the land. Then a mute man with a demon is brought in, begins to speak when the demon is driven out, and leaves the crowd amazed while the Pharisees produce a darker explanation.

Crowds without a shepherdvv. 35–38

Jesus goes through towns and villages, teaching, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness. Seeing the crowds, He is moved with compassion because they are harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then the scene becomes agricultural: the harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few, and the disciples are told to ask the Lord of the harvest to send workers.

  1. Matt 9:1Jesus got into a boat, crossed over, and came to His own town.

  2. Matt 9:2Just then some men brought to Him a paralytic lying on a mat. When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralytic, “Take courage, son; your sins are forgiven.”

  3. Matt 9:3On seeing this, some of the scribes said to themselves, “This man is blaspheming!”

  4. Matt 9:4But Jesus knew what they were thinking and said, “Why do you harbor evil in your hearts?

  5. Matt 9:5Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’?

  6. Matt 9:6But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins...” Then He said to the paralytic, “Get up, pick up your mat, and go home.”

  7. Matt 9:7And the man got up and went home.

  8. Matt 9:8When the crowds saw this, they were filled with awe and glorified God, who had given such authority to men.

  9. Matt 9:9As Jesus went on from there, He saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax booth. “Follow Me,” He told him, and Matthew got up and followed Him.

  10. Matt 9:10Later, as Jesus was dining at Matthew’s house, many tax collectors and sinners came and ate with Him and His disciples.

  11. Matt 9:11When the Pharisees saw this, they asked His disciples, “Why does your Teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”

  12. Matt 9:12On hearing this, Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.

  13. Matt 9:13But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”

  14. Matt 9:14Then John’s disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Why is it that we and the Pharisees fast so often, but Your disciples do not fast?”

  15. Matt 9:15Jesus replied, “How can the guests of the bridegroom mourn while He is with them? But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; then they will fast.

  16. Matt 9:16No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment. For the patch will pull away from the garment, and a worse tear will result.

  17. Matt 9:17Neither do men pour new wine into old wineskins. If they do, the skins will burst, the wine will spill, and the wineskins will be ruined. Instead, they pour new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved.”

  18. Matt 9:18While Jesus was saying these things, a synagogue leader came and knelt before Him. “My daughter has just died,” he said. “But come and place Your hand on her, and she will live.”

  19. Matt 9:19So Jesus got up and went with him, along with His disciples.

  20. Matt 9:20Suddenly a woman who had suffered from bleeding for twelve years came up behind Him and touched the fringe of His cloak.

  21. Matt 9:21She said to herself, “If only I touch His cloak, I will be healed.”

  22. Matt 9:22Jesus turned and saw her. “Take courage, daughter,” He said, “your faith has healed you.” And the woman was healed from that very hour.

  23. Matt 9:23When Jesus entered the house of the synagogue leader, He saw the flute players and the noisy crowd.

  24. Matt 9:24“Go away,” He told them. “The girl is not dead, but asleep.” And they laughed at Him.

  25. Matt 9:25After the crowd had been put outside, Jesus went in and took the girl by the hand, and she got up.

  26. Matt 9:26And the news about this spread throughout that region.

  27. Matt 9:27As Jesus went on from there, two blind men followed Him, crying out, “Have mercy on us, Son of David!”

  28. Matt 9:28After Jesus had entered the house, the blind men came to Him. “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” He asked. “Yes, Lord,” they answered.

  29. Matt 9:29Then He touched their eyes and said, “According to your faith will it be done to you.”

  30. Matt 9:30And their eyes were opened. Jesus warned them sternly, “See that no one finds out about this!”

  31. Matt 9:31But they went out and spread the news about Him throughout the land.

  32. Matt 9:32As they were leaving, a demon-possessed man who was mute was brought to Jesus.

  33. Matt 9:33And when the demon had been driven out, the man began to speak. The crowds were amazed and said, “Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel!”

  34. Matt 9:34But the Pharisees said, “It is by the prince of demons that He drives out demons.”

  35. Matt 9:35Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness.

  36. Matt 9:36When He saw the crowds, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.

  37. Matt 9:37Then He said to His disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few.

  38. Matt 9:38Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into His harvest.”

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
