The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

Nineveh drains like a pool, and even the cry to stop cannot make anyone turn back.

The attack reaches the palacevv. 1–6

One who scatters advances against Nineveh, while its defenders are told to guard, watch, brace themselves, and summon their strength. Red shields, scarlet warriors, flashing chariots, and brandished spears fill the approach; nobles stumble towards the wall, and then the river gates open. The palace collapses with splendid brevity.

The city is emptiedvv. 7–10

The city is decreed for exile, and its maidservants moan and beat upon their breasts. Nineveh, once like a pool, now drains away while voices cry for the flow to stop; no one turns back. Then comes the remarkably brisk shopping list of the ruin: silver, gold, and an abundance of every precious thing, until the city is empty, desolate, and laid waste.

The lion’s lair is answeredvv. 11–13

The ruined city is suddenly imagined as a lion’s lair: lion, lioness, and cubs once prowled without fright, with dens full of prey. Against that old confidence comes the LORD of Hosts, who declares that the chariots will become cinders, the young lions will be devoured, the prey cut off, and the voices of the messengers silenced.

  1. Nah 2:1One who scatters advances against you, O Nineveh. Guard the fortress! Watch the road! Brace yourselves! Summon all your strength!

  2. Nah 2:2For the LORD will restore the splendor of Jacob like the splendor of Israel, though destroyers have laid them waste and ruined the branches of their vine.

  3. Nah 2:3The shields of his mighty men are red; the valiant warriors are dressed in scarlet. The fittings of the chariots flash like fire on the day they are prepared, and the spears of cypress have been brandished.

  4. Nah 2:4The chariots dash through the streets; they rush around the plazas, appearing like torches, darting about like lightning.

  5. Nah 2:5He summons his nobles; they stumble as they advance. They race to its wall; the protective shield is set in place.

  6. Nah 2:6The river gates are thrown open and the palace collapses.

  7. Nah 2:7It is decreed that the city be exiled and carried away; her maidservants moan like doves, and beat upon their breasts.

  8. Nah 2:8Nineveh has been like a pool of water throughout her days, but now it is draining away. “Stop! Stop!” they cry, but no one turns back.

  9. Nah 2:9“Plunder the silver! Plunder the gold!” There is no end to the treasure, an abundance of every precious thing.

  10. Nah 2:10She is emptied! Yes, she is desolate and laid waste! Hearts melt, knees knock, bodies tremble, and every face grows pale!

  11. Nah 2:11Where is the lions’ lair or the feeding ground of the young lions, where the lion and lioness prowled with their cubs, with nothing to frighten them away?

  12. Nah 2:12The lion mauled enough for its cubs and strangled prey for the lioness. It filled its dens with the kill, and its lairs with mauled prey.

  13. Nah 2:13“Behold, I am against you,” declares the LORD of Hosts. “I will reduce your chariots to cinders, and the sword will devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voices of your messengers will no longer be heard.”

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
