The chapter
What happens here
Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.
The slacker has a lion outside, a death sentence in the streets, and apparently no intention of testing either proposition.
A lion outsidevv. 1–16
The sayings begin by placing a good name above riches and the Maker above both rich and poor. Prudence takes cover when danger appears, while the simple continue on; injustice sows its own harvest, and generosity shares bread with the poor. Then comes the chapter’s splendidly specific excuse: “The slacker says, “There is a lion outside! I will be slain in the streets!”” The warnings move on through the adulteress’s deep pit, the child’s foolishness, and the curious economy of enriching oneself by oppressing the poor, which leads instead to poverty.
Thirty sayings, and a missing bedvv. 17–29
The voice now turns directly to its hearer, asking for an ear and a mind, and announces a surprisingly exact inventory: “Have I not written for you thirty sayings about counsel and knowledge,” though the chapter does not enumerate them. Their purpose is a sound answer to those who sent the hearer. The instructions then gather force at the gate: do not rob the poor, make friends with neither the angry nor the hot-tempered, and do not put up security for another’s debt. The final warning imagines the debt paid in furniture: “If you have nothing with which to pay, why should your bed be taken from under you?” The chapter closes with an ancient boundary stone and a skilled worker standing before kings.
