What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

God is found by people who were not looking for Him, and revealed to people who had not asked. Romans 10 leaves that reversal standing, while Israel, zealous for God, is described as reaching for righteousness by a route that misses it.

Zeal, righteousness, and the word close at handvv. 1–10

The chapter opens with a desire and a prayer: Israel’s salvation. Their zeal for God is acknowledged, but it is not joined to knowledge; seeking to establish their own righteousness, they do not submit to God’s righteousness. Christ is called the end of the law, and the two kinds of righteousness are set beside one another. The righteousness by faith does not send anyone on an expedition to heaven or the Abyss. The word is already near—in mouth and heart—and faith is spoken as confession and held as belief.

Beautiful feet, unwelcome newsvv. 11–17

The promise widens: no difference between Jew and Greek, one Lord over all, richly giving to all who call. Then comes a delightful staircase of questions. Calling requires believing, believing requires hearing, hearing requires preaching, and preaching requires sending. The feet of those who bring good news emerge as the chapter’s unexpectedly precise objects of admiration. Yet the news is not universally welcomed, and faith is said to come by hearing the word of Christ.

Heard, understood, and still held out tovv. 18–21

The questions now turn upon Israel. Did they not hear? Indeed they did, with a voice gone out into all the earth and words reaching its ends. Did Israel not understand? Moses answers with jealousy stirred by a nation without understanding; Isaiah goes further, describing God as found by those who did not seek Him and revealed to those who did not ask. Israel’s final image is not of absent attention but of hands held out all day long to a disobedient and obstinate people.

  1. Rom 10:1Brothers, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for the Israelites is for their salvation.

  2. Rom 10:2For I testify about them that they are zealous for God, but not on the basis of knowledge.

  3. Rom 10:3Because they were ignorant of God’s righteousness and sought to establish their own, they did not submit to God’s righteousness.

  4. Rom 10:4For Christ is the end of the law, to bring righteousness to everyone who believes.

  5. Rom 10:5For concerning the righteousness that is by the law, Moses writes: “The man who does these things will live by them.”

  6. Rom 10:6But the righteousness that is by faith says: “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’ (that is, to bring Christ down)

  7. Rom 10:7or, ‘Who will descend into the Abyss?’ (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead).”

  8. Rom 10:8But what does it say? “The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart,” that is, the word of faith we are proclaiming:

  9. Rom 10:9that if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.

  10. Rom 10:10For with your heart you believe and are justified, and with your mouth you confess and are saved.

  11. Rom 10:11It is just as the Scripture says: “Anyone who believes in Him will never be put to shame.”

  12. Rom 10:12For there is no difference between Jew and Greek: The same Lord is Lord of all, and gives richly to all who call on Him,

  13. Rom 10:13for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

  14. Rom 10:14How then can they call on the One in whom they have not believed? And how can they believe in the One of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone to preach?

  15. Rom 10:15And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!”

  16. Rom 10:16But not all of them welcomed the good news. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed our message?”

  17. Rom 10:17Consequently, faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.

  18. Rom 10:18But I ask, did they not hear? Indeed they did: “Their voice has gone out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world.”

  19. Rom 10:19I ask instead, did Israel not understand? First, Moses says: “I will make you jealous by those who are not a nation; I will make you angry by a nation without understanding.”

  20. Rom 10:20And Isaiah boldly says: “I was found by those who did not seek Me; I revealed Myself to those who did not ask for Me.”

  21. Rom 10:21But as for Israel he says: “All day long I have held out My hands to a disobedient and obstinate people.”

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
