What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

Peter is blessed, renamed, handed the keys of heaven—and, a few breaths later, told to get behind Satan. The distance between the rock and the stumbling block is apparently one sentence about suffering.

The wrong sort of leavenvv. 1–12

The Pharisees and Sadducees ask Jesus for a sign from heaven, while Jesus points out that the sky has been successfully interpreted and the times have not. He leaves them with the sign of Jonah. Then, crossing to the other side, the disciples discover that they have forgotten bread, and Jesus speaks of leaven. They immediately conclude that bread is the subject, despite the recent history of five loaves, seven loaves, and an extraordinary number of baskets. At last, the loaf-shaped misunderstanding is removed: the leaven means the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

The rock and the stumbling blockvv. 13–20

At Caesarea Philippi, Jesus asks what people say about the Son of Man. The answers produce John the Baptist, Elijah, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets; Peter then gives the answer that matters to Jesus: the Christ, the Son of the living God. Peter receives a blessing, a new name, a church built on rock, and the keys of the kingdom of heaven. The disciples are nevertheless told not to announce the matter. A splendid secret, then, with keys attached.

Peter objects to the plotvv. 21–28

Jesus now begins to tell the disciples that Jerusalem, suffering, death, and resurrection lie ahead. Peter takes Him aside and rebukes Him, which is a remarkably bold use of the newly issued keys. Jesus answers by calling Peter Satan and a stumbling block, because Peter has in mind the things of men rather than the things of God. The teaching turns toward losing life to find it, and toward the Son of Man coming in His Father’s glory. The final sentence leaves some unnamed people standing there, alive before they see that coming in the kingdom; the text does not say which people, or when.

  1. Matt 16:1Then the Pharisees and Sadducees came and tested Jesus by asking Him to show them a sign from heaven.

  2. Matt 16:2But He replied, “When evening comes, you say, ‘The weather will be fair, for the sky is red,’

  3. Matt 16:3and in the morning, ‘Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but not the signs of the times.

  4. Matt 16:4A wicked and adulterous generation demands a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah.” Then He left them and went away.

  5. Matt 16:5When they crossed to the other side, the disciples forgot to take bread.

  6. Matt 16:6“Watch out!” Jesus told them. “Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”

  7. Matt 16:7They discussed this among themselves and concluded, “It is because we did not bring any bread.”

  8. Matt 16:8Aware of their conversation, Jesus said, “You of little faith, why are you debating among yourselves about having no bread?

  9. Matt 16:9Do you still not understand? Do you not remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered?

  10. Matt 16:10Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered?

  11. Matt 16:11How do you not understand that I was not telling you about bread? But beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”

  12. Matt 16:12Then they understood that He was not telling them to beware of the leaven used in bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

  13. Matt 16:13When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, He questioned His disciples: “Who do people say the Son of Man is?”

  14. Matt 16:14They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”

  15. Matt 16:15“But what about you?” Jesus asked. “Who do you say I am?”

  16. Matt 16:16Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

  17. Matt 16:17Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah! For this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by My Father in heaven.

  18. Matt 16:18And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it.

  19. Matt 16:19I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”

  20. Matt 16:20Then He admonished the disciples not to tell anyone that He was the Christ.

  21. Matt 16:21From that time on Jesus began to show His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests, and scribes, and that He must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.

  22. Matt 16:22Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him. “Far be it from You, Lord!” he said. “This shall never happen to You!”

  23. Matt 16:23But Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind Me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to Me. For you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men.”

  24. Matt 16:24Then Jesus told His disciples, “If anyone wants to come after Me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow Me.

  25. Matt 16:25For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.

  26. Matt 16:26What will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul?

  27. Matt 16:27For the Son of Man will come in His Father’s glory with His angels, and then He will repay each one according to what he has done.

  28. Matt 16:28Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in His kingdom.”

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
