Matthew 4
Every verse links to the people and places named in it, and to the passages readers connect it with.
The chapter
What happens here
Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.
The devil quotes Scripture at Jesus, Jesus quotes it back, and when the devil leaves, angels come to minister to Him.
A wilderness argument in Scripturevv. 1–11
Jesus is led by the Spirit into the wilderness, where forty days of fasting leave Him hungry and the devil arrives with three proposals. Bread, a leap from the temple, and all the kingdoms of the world are offered in turn; Jesus answers each time with Scripture. The devil can quote it too, which gives the whole encounter the air of a very strange disputation. At the end he leaves, and angels come to minister to Jesus, with no further explanation supplied.
From John’s imprisonment to the light of Galileevv. 12–17
When Jesus hears that John has been imprisoned, He withdraws to Galilee, leaves Nazareth, and settles in Capernaum by the sea. The chapter pauses to name Zebulun, Naphtali, the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan, and Galilee of the Gentiles before announcing light in a land of darkness. Then Jesus begins to preach: “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near.”
Nets, boats, and a widening crowdvv. 18–25
Beside the Sea of Galilee, Jesus calls Simon Peter and Andrew away from their nets with the promise of making them “fishers of men.” James and John follow at once as well, leaving their boat and their father Zebedee behind. Jesus then teaches, preaches, and heals throughout Galilee; the news travels as far as Syria, and crowds arrive from Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea, and beyond the Jordan. It is an impressively rapid expansion from two nets and one boat.

Matt 4:1Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.
Matt 4:2After fasting forty days and forty nights, He was hungry.
Matt 4:3The tempter came to Him and said, “If You are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”
Matt 4:4But Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”
Matt 4:5Then the devil took Him to the holy city and set Him on the pinnacle of the temple.
Matt 4:6“If You are the Son of God,” he said, “throw Yourself down. For it is written: ‘He will command His angels concerning You, and they will lift You up in their hands, so that You will not strike Your foot against a stone.’”
Matt 4:7Jesus replied, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’”
Matt 4:8Again, the devil took Him to a very high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory.
Matt 4:9“All this I will give You,” he said, “if You will fall down and worship me.”
Matt 4:10“Away from Me, Satan!” Jesus told him. “For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve Him only.’”
Matt 4:11Then the devil left Him, and angels came and ministered to Him.
Matt 4:12When Jesus heard that John had been imprisoned, He withdrew to Galilee.
Matt 4:13Leaving Nazareth, He went and lived in Capernaum, which is by the sea in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali,
Matt 4:14to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah:
Matt 4:15“Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles—
Matt 4:16the people living in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death, a light has dawned.”
Matt 4:17From that time on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near.”
Matt 4:18As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen.
Matt 4:19“Come, follow Me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.”
Matt 4:20And at once they left their nets and followed Him.
Matt 4:21Going on from there, He saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets. Jesus called them,
Matt 4:22and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed Him.
Matt 4:23Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people.
Matt 4:24News about Him spread all over Syria, and people brought to Him all who were ill with various diseases, those suffering acute pain, the demon-possessed, those having seizures, and the paralyzed, and He healed them.
Matt 4:25Large crowds followed Him, having come from Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea, and beyond the Jordan.

Who else the chapter reaches
Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.
Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.
Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
