Every verse links to the people and places named in it, and to the passages readers connect it with.

The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

Jacob spends the night with a stone under his head, sees heaven traffic on a ladder, and then turns the pillow into a pillar before making God a practical offer about food, clothing, and getting home.

A blessing with a destinationvv. 1–5

Isaac sends Jacob away from Canaanite marriage and towards the family house at Paddan-aram, where Laban’s daughters are to provide the matrimonial possibilities. The blessing is enormous: fruitfulness, nations, Abraham’s blessing, and the land itself. Jacob is dispatched carrying both a family instruction and a very large promise.

Esau adds a wifevv. 6–9

Esau notices that Isaac disapproves of Canaanite women and that Jacob has obeyed. His response is to marry Mahalath, daughter of Ishmael and sister of Nebaioth, while retaining the wives already in place. It is a remarkably Esau-shaped attempt at adjustment: add another marriage, leave the existing arrangements untouched.

The stone, the ladder, and the termsvv. 10–22

Jacob leaves Beersheba and stops when sunset makes further travel inconvenient. A stone serves first as a pillow, then—after a dream of angels ascending and descending between earth and heaven—as a pillar, anointed with oil and renamed Bethel. The LORD promises land, descendants, blessing, company, watchfulness, and return; Jacob answers with a vow whose conditions are strikingly domestic: presence, protection, food, clothes, and a safe journey home. The heavenly ladder receives, in return, a carefully itemised arrangement.

  1. Gen 28:1So Isaac called for Jacob and blessed him. “Do not take a wife from the Canaanite women,” he commanded.

  2. Gen 28:2“Go at once to Paddan-aram, to the house of your mother’s father Bethuel, and take a wife from among the daughters of Laban, your mother’s brother.

  3. Gen 28:3May God Almighty bless you and make you fruitful and multiply you, so that you may become a company of peoples.

  4. Gen 28:4And may He give the blessing of Abraham to you and your descendants, so that you may possess the land where you dwell as a foreigner, the land God gave to Abraham.”

  5. Gen 28:5So Isaac sent Jacob to Paddan-aram, to Laban son of Bethuel the Aramean, the brother of Rebekah, who was the mother of Jacob and Esau.

  6. Gen 28:6Now Esau learned that Isaac had blessed Jacob and sent him to Paddan-aram to take a wife there, commanding him, “Do not marry a Canaanite woman,”

  7. Gen 28:7and that Jacob had obeyed his father and mother and gone to Paddan-aram.

  8. Gen 28:8And seeing that his father Isaac disapproved of the Canaanite women,

  9. Gen 28:9Esau went to Ishmael and married Mahalath, the sister of Nebaioth and daughter of Abraham’s son Ishmael, in addition to the wives he already had.

  10. Gen 28:10Meanwhile Jacob left Beersheba and set out for Haran.

  11. Gen 28:11On reaching a certain place, he spent the night there because the sun had set. And taking one of the stones from that place, he put it under his head and lay down to sleep.

  12. Gen 28:12And Jacob had a dream about a ladder that rested on the earth with its top reaching up to heaven, and God’s angels were going up and down the ladder.

  13. Gen 28:13And there at the top the LORD was standing and saying, “I am the LORD, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the land on which you now lie.

  14. Gen 28:14Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west and east and north and south. All the families of the earth will be blessed through you and your offspring.

  15. Gen 28:15Look, I am with you, and I will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. For I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.”

  16. Gen 28:16When Jacob woke up, he said, “Surely the LORD is in this place, and I was unaware of it.”

  17. Gen 28:17And he was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven!”

  18. Gen 28:18Early the next morning, Jacob took the stone that he had placed under his head, and he set it up as a pillar. He poured oil on top of it,

  19. Gen 28:19and he called that place Bethel, though previously the city had been named Luz.

  20. Gen 28:20Then Jacob made a vow, saying, “If God will be with me and watch over me on this journey, and if He will provide me with food to eat and clothes to wear,

  21. Gen 28:21so that I may return safely to my father’s house, then the LORD will be my God.

  22. Gen 28:22And this stone I have set up as a pillar will be God’s house, and of all that You give me I will surely give You a tenth.”

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
