The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

Mount Seir is promised the very fate it once applauded: while the whole earth rejoices, it is made desolate, as desolate as the inheritance of Israel that had pleased it so much.

A face set against Seirvv. 1–4

The word of the LORD comes to Ezekiel with a severe little itinerary: set your face against Mount Seir and prophesy. Its cities will become ruins, its land a desolation, and the recognition that follows is the repeated refrain: then it will know who the LORD is.

When bloodshed comes lookingvv. 5–9

The charge is an ancient hatred, made practical by handing Israelites over to the sword when their disaster was reaching its final stage. The sentence has a neat and grim hinge: because Mount Seir did not hate bloodshed, bloodshed will pursue it. The hills, valleys, and ravines are then given a very crowded future, while the cities receive none at all.

The boast overheardvv. 10–15

Mount Seir has spoken as though two nations and countries were available for collection, despite the LORD being there. It has also called the mountains of Israel desolate and ready to devour, and multiplied its words against the LORD. The speech answers with judgment, and with the wonderfully blunt aside that none of it escaped notice: “I heard it Myself!” Its pleasure over Israel’s desolation is returned to it, measure for measure, until Edom too is a desolation.

  1. Ezek 35:1Moreover, the word of the LORD came to me, saying,

  2. Ezek 35:2“Son of man, set your face against Mount Seir and prophesy against it,

  3. Ezek 35:3and declare that this is what the Lord GOD says: Behold, I am against you, O Mount Seir. I will stretch out My hand against you and make you a desolate waste.

  4. Ezek 35:4I will turn your cities into ruins, and you will become a desolation. Then you will know that I am the LORD.

  5. Ezek 35:5Because you harbored an ancient hatred and delivered the Israelites over to the sword in the time of their disaster at the final stage of their punishment,

  6. Ezek 35:6therefore as surely as I live, declares the Lord GOD, I will give you over to bloodshed and it will pursue you. Since you did not hate bloodshed, it will pursue you.

  7. Ezek 35:7I will make Mount Seir a desolate waste and will cut off from it those who come and go.

  8. Ezek 35:8I will fill its mountains with the slain; those killed by the sword will fall on your hills, in your valleys, and in all your ravines.

  9. Ezek 35:9I will make you a perpetual desolation, and your cities will not be inhabited. Then you will know that I am the LORD.

  10. Ezek 35:10Because you have said, ‘These two nations and countries will be ours, and we will possess them,’ even though the LORD was there,

  11. Ezek 35:11therefore as surely as I live, declares the Lord GOD, I will treat you according to the anger and jealousy you showed in your hatred against them, and I will make Myself known among them when I judge you.

  12. Ezek 35:12Then you will know that I, the LORD, have heard every contemptuous word you uttered against the mountains of Israel when you said, ‘They are desolate; they are given to us to devour!’

  13. Ezek 35:13You boasted against Me with your mouth and multiplied your words against Me. I heard it Myself!

  14. Ezek 35:14This is what the Lord GOD says: While the whole earth rejoices, I will make you desolate.

  15. Ezek 35:15As you rejoiced when the inheritance of the house of Israel became desolate, so will I do to you. You will become a desolation, O Mount Seir, and so will all of Edom. Then they will know that I am the LORD.’’

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
