Description

Who was Pharaoh?

In the words of STEPBible TIPNR:

This Pharaoh was the Egyptian ruler during the reign of King Solomon (1Ki.3.1; 9.16). Solomon made an alliance with Pharaoh and married his daughter, who brought the city of Gezer as a dowry. Solomon built a separate palace for Pharaoh's daughter (1Ki.7.8; 9.24; 2Ch.8.11) and included her among his many foreign wives (1Ki.11.1).

The Bible also mentions that Hadad, an Edomite prince, fled to Egypt during David's reign and found favor with Pharaoh, who gave him land and provisions and arranged for him to marry the sister of Queen Tahpenes (1Ki.11.18-20). Hadad's son Genubath was raised in Pharaoh's court (1Ki.11.20).

The specific identity of this Pharaoh is not provided in the Bible. However, based on the historical and archaeological evidence, some scholars suggest that he may have been Siamun or Psusennes II, rulers of the 21st Dynasty of Egypt, which was contemporary with Solomon's reign.

Relations

Direct connections

Every entity the graph places in a stated relation with this one, grouped by the kind of link. Each relation is authored once and its inverse derived, so both ends always agree. Rows marked “registry” come from the identity spine rather than from a verse, and a row marked “which bearer is the source’s decision” is one where the name could have meant more than one person. The last group is not a relation at all — it counts the events two entities stand in together.

How the graph connects Pharaoh 10 of 12 entities the graph connects to Pharaoh, in 2 groups: kinship 1, events 9. Kinship, company and ground are stated relations; events counts the acts two entities stand in together and is not a relation. Each mark is sized by how many verses name that entity and labelled with the link and the count, so the grouping and the size are both readable without colour. Distance from the centre carries nothing.TahpenesPartner of · 2 versesKinshipEgypt1 event · 649 versesSolomon1 event · 272 versesCanaan1 event · 146 versesFood1 event · 128 versesEdom1 event · 100 versesMidian1 event · 59 versesGezer2 events · 16 versesParan1 event · 8 versesHadad5 events · 5 versesEventsPharaoh

Where this happens

The places the claims about this person reach, drawn where the gazetteer locates them. A point is where a row puts them and never where tradition does; no line joins two points, because the rows state where and not in what order.

Where the story of Pharaoh happens The one place the claims about Pharaoh reach, on a map of the world the text moves through, framed to them: Egypt. Each dot is a coordinate from the gazetteer, sized by how many rows put Pharaoh there. The coastline is a modern one, simplified; no border, road or settlement of any period is drawn, and no line joins two points, because the rows state where and not in what order.Egypt

Where Pharaoh is named

Every book of the corpus in the order it is read, each as wide as the chapters it holds. A bar is the verses of that book which write the name, and the flat stretches are as much of the answer as the bars.

12 verses across 3 of 66 books; 63 write the name nowhere. Named in 1 Kings (10), 2 Chronicles (1) and Song of Songs (1).

Pharaoh is named in 12 verses, and the name is written 15 times in them — occurrences of the name in the Hebrew or Greek, counted in the versification of the Berean Standard Bible (v5.7). Every book of the corpus is drawn, its width its share of the 1,189 chapters. 63 of the 66 books never write it. A verse that tells of this subject without writing the name is not counted here.
