What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

The Philistine rulers marched up for a fight, Samuel offered a burnt offering, and the LORD thundered so loudly that the army fled in confusion before Israel could engage it. A battle, in this telling, is rather abruptly cancelled by weather of a most decisive kind.

The ark, the water, and the confessionvv. 1–6

The men of Kiriath-jearim carried the ark into Abinadab’s house on the hill, and Eleazar was consecrated to guard it. Twenty years passed while the ark remained there, and Israel mournfully sought the LORD. Samuel then gave the remedy in plain terms: put away the foreign gods, prepare the heart, and serve the LORD only. Israel did so, and gathered at Mizpah, where the people drew water and poured it out before the LORD—a striking action which the chapter performs without explaining. They fasted, confessed their sin, and Samuel judged them there.

The battle that thunder misplacedvv. 7–12

The Philistines heard of the gathering and their rulers marched toward Israel. Fear arrived before the army did, and the Israelites begged Samuel to keep crying out to the LORD for them. Samuel offered a suckling lamb and cried out; the LORD answered. Then, just as the Philistines drew near, the LORD thundered loudly, confused them, and sent them fleeing. Israel charged from Mizpah and pursued them as far as below Beth-car. Samuel set up a stone between Mizpah and Shen and called it Ebenezer, with the memorable explanation, “Thus far the LORD has helped us.”

Samuel’s circuitvv. 13–17

The Philistines were subdued and stopped invading Israel’s territory, while the cities from Ekron to Gath were restored. Peace followed between Israel and the Amorites. Samuel judged Israel all his life, travelling each year from Bethel to Gilgal to Mizpah, then returning to Ramah, where his home was and where he built an altar to the LORD.

  1. 1 Sam 7:1Then the men of Kiriath-jearim came for the ark of the LORD and took it into Abinadab’s house on the hill. And they consecrated his son Eleazar to guard the ark of the LORD.

  2. 1 Sam 7:2And from that day a long time passed, twenty years in all, as the ark remained at Kiriath-jearim. And all the house of Israel mournfully sought the LORD.

  3. 1 Sam 7:3Then Samuel said to all the house of Israel, “If you are returning to the LORD with all your hearts, then put away the foreign gods and Ashtoreths among you, prepare your hearts for the LORD, and serve Him only. And He will deliver you from the hand of the Philistines.”

  4. 1 Sam 7:4So the Israelites put away the Baals and Ashtoreths and served only the LORD.

  5. 1 Sam 7:5Then Samuel said, “Gather all Israel to Mizpah, and I will pray to the LORD on your behalf.”

  6. 1 Sam 7:6When they had gathered at Mizpah, they drew water and poured it out before the LORD. On that day they fasted, and there they confessed, “We have sinned against the LORD.” And Samuel judged the Israelites at Mizpah.

  7. 1 Sam 7:7When the Philistines heard that the Israelites had gathered at Mizpah, their rulers marched up toward Israel. And when the Israelites learned of this, they feared the Philistines

  8. 1 Sam 7:8and said to Samuel, “Do not stop crying out to the LORD our God for us, that He may save us from the hand of the Philistines.”

  9. 1 Sam 7:9Then Samuel took a suckling lamb and offered it as a whole burnt offering to the LORD. He cried out to the LORD on behalf of Israel, and the LORD answered him.

  10. 1 Sam 7:10As the Philistines drew near to fight against Israel, Samuel was offering up the burnt offering. But that day the LORD thundered loudly against the Philistines and threw them into such confusion that they fled before Israel.

  11. 1 Sam 7:11Then the men of Israel charged out of Mizpah and pursued the Philistines, striking them down all the way to an area below Beth-car.

  12. 1 Sam 7:12Afterward, Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen. He named it Ebenezer, saying, “Thus far the LORD has helped us.”

  13. 1 Sam 7:13So the Philistines were subdued, and they stopped invading the territory of Israel. And the hand of the LORD was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel.

  14. 1 Sam 7:14The cities from Ekron to Gath, which the Philistines had taken, were restored to Israel, who also delivered the surrounding territory from the hand of the Philistines. And there was peace between the Israelites and the Amorites.

  15. 1 Sam 7:15So Samuel judged Israel all the days of his life.

  16. 1 Sam 7:16Every year he would go on a circuit from Bethel to Gilgal to Mizpah, judging Israel in all these places.

  17. 1 Sam 7:17Then he would return to Ramah because his home was there, and there he judged Israel and built an altar to the LORD.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
