The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

Asa spends ten peaceful years fortifying the land, then meets a million men at Mareshah—and the great victory ends with sheep and camels.

Peace with walls on itvv. 1–8

Abijah rests with his fathers, and Asa takes the throne. The land enjoys ten years of peace, which is precisely why Asa builds fortified cities: no one is making war, the LORD has given rest, and Asa is putting doors, bars, walls, and towers on the quiet. He also removes altars, pillars, high places, and Asherah poles, while Judah and Benjamin furnish an army of 580,000 men between them. Peace, in this telling, comes with a building programme and a remarkably well-counted army.

A million men, then sheep and camelsvv. 9–15

Zerah the Cushite arrives with 1,000,000 men and 300 chariots, advancing to Mareshah. Asa meets him in the Valley of Zephathah and cries out to the LORD, whose answer is wonderfully decisive: the Cushites flee, fall, and cannot recover. The pursuit reaches Gerar; the cities around it are plundered; and after the enormous army has vanished from the tale, the Judahites turn to the tents of herdsmen, carrying off sheep and camels. The battlefield leaves behind a very pastoral sort of receipt.

  1. 2 Chr 14:1Then Abijah rested with his fathers and was buried in the City of David. And his son Asa reigned in his place, and in his days the land was at peace for ten years.

  2. 2 Chr 14:2And Asa did what was good and right in the eyes of the LORD his God.

  3. 2 Chr 14:3He removed the foreign altars and high places, shattered the sacred pillars, and chopped down the Asherah poles.

  4. 2 Chr 14:4He commanded the people of Judah to seek the LORD, the God of their fathers, and to observe the law and the commandments.

  5. 2 Chr 14:5He also removed the high places and incense altars from all the cities of Judah, and under him the kingdom was at peace.

  6. 2 Chr 14:6Because the land was at peace, Asa built fortified cities in Judah. In those days no one made war with him, because the LORD had given him rest.

  7. 2 Chr 14:7So he said to the people of Judah, “Let us build these cities and surround them with walls and towers, with doors and bars. The land is still ours because we have sought the LORD our God. We have sought Him, and He has given us rest on every side.” So they built and prospered.

  8. 2 Chr 14:8Asa had an army of 300,000 men from Judah bearing large shields and spears, and 280,000 men from Benjamin bearing small shields and drawing the bow. All these were mighty men of valor.

  9. 2 Chr 14:9Then Zerah the Cushite came against them with an army of 1,000,000 men and 300 chariots, and they advanced as far as Mareshah.

  10. 2 Chr 14:10So Asa marched out against him and lined up in battle formation in the Valley of Zephathah near Mareshah.

  11. 2 Chr 14:11Then Asa cried out to the LORD his God: “O LORD, there is no one besides You to help the powerless against the mighty. Help us, O LORD our God, for we rely on You, and in Your name we have come against this multitude. O LORD, You are our God. Do not let a mere mortal prevail against You.”

  12. 2 Chr 14:12So the LORD struck down the Cushites before Asa and Judah, and the Cushites fled.

  13. 2 Chr 14:13Then Asa and his army pursued them as far as Gerar. The Cushites fell and could not recover, for they were crushed before the LORD and His army. So the people of Judah carried off a great amount of plunder

  14. 2 Chr 14:14and attacked all the cities around Gerar, because the terror of the LORD had fallen upon them. They plundered all the cities, since there was much plunder there.

  15. 2 Chr 14:15They also attacked the tents of the herdsmen and carried off many sheep and camels. Then they returned to Jerusalem.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
