What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

Abram entered Egypt with his wife presented as his sister; Pharaoh took her into his palace, and the LORD answered with plagues. It is a remarkably brisk way for a family arrangement to become an international incident.

The land shown to Abramvv. 1–9

The LORD sent Abram away from his country, kindred, and father’s household with a promise of blessing, a great name, and a land still unnamed. Abram departed from Haran at seventy-five, taking Sarai, Lot, their possessions, and their acquired people, and travelled into Canaan. At Shechem, by the Oak of Moreh, the LORD appeared and promised the land to Abram’s offspring; Abram answered with an altar. He made another altar east of Bethel, between Bethel and Ai, and then continued towards the Negev.

The sister who was a wifevv. 10–20

A severe famine drove Abram down to Egypt. Near the border he feared that the Egyptians would kill him for Sarai and asked her to say she was his sister, which led Pharaoh’s officials to take her into Pharaoh’s palace. Abram prospered on her account, acquiring livestock and servants, while the LORD afflicted Pharaoh and his household with severe plagues. Pharaoh summoned Abram, objected to the arrangement with admirable directness, returned Sarai, and sent them away with all their possessions.

  1. Gen 12:1Then the LORD said to Abram, “Leave your country, your kindred, and your father’s household, and go to the land I will show you.

  2. Gen 12:2I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, so that you will be a blessing.

  3. Gen 12:3I will bless those who bless you and curse those who curse you; and all the families of the earth will be blessed through you.”

  4. Gen 12:4So Abram departed, as the LORD had directed him, and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he left Haran.

  5. Gen 12:5And Abram took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, and all the possessions and people they had acquired in Haran, and set out for the land of Canaan. When they came to the land of Canaan,

  6. Gen 12:6Abram traveled through the land as far as the site of the Oak of Moreh at Shechem. And at that time the Canaanites were in the land.

  7. Gen 12:7Then the LORD appeared to Abram and said, “I will give this land to your offspring.” So Abram built an altar there to the LORD, who had appeared to him.

  8. Gen 12:8From there Abram moved on to the hill country east of Bethel and pitched his tent, with Bethel to the west and Ai to the east. There he built an altar to the LORD, and he called on the name of the LORD.

  9. Gen 12:9And Abram journeyed on toward the Negev.

  10. Gen 12:10Now there was a famine in the land. So Abram went down to Egypt to live there for a while because the famine was severe.

  11. Gen 12:11As he was about to enter Egypt, he said to his wife Sarai, “Look, I know that you are a beautiful woman,

  12. Gen 12:12and when the Egyptians see you, they will say, ‘This is his wife.’ Then they will kill me but will let you live.

  13. Gen 12:13Please say you are my sister, so that I will be treated well for your sake, and on account of you my life will be spared.”

  14. Gen 12:14So when Abram entered Egypt, the Egyptians saw that the woman was very beautiful.

  15. Gen 12:15When Pharaoh’s officials saw Sarai, they commended her to him, and she was taken into the palace of Pharaoh.

  16. Gen 12:16He treated Abram well on her account, and Abram acquired sheep and cattle, male and female donkeys, menservants and maidservants, and camels.

  17. Gen 12:17The LORD, however, afflicted Pharaoh and his household with severe plagues because of Abram’s wife Sarai.

  18. Gen 12:18So Pharaoh summoned Abram and asked, “What have you done to me? Why didn’t you tell me she was your wife?

  19. Gen 12:19Why did you say, ‘She is my sister,’ so that I took her as my wife? Now then, here is your wife. Take her and go!”

  20. Gen 12:20Then Pharaoh gave his men orders concerning Abram, and they sent him away with his wife and all his possessions.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
