The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

The sea is dried by rebuke, the rivers become desert, and the fish rot for lack of water before dying of thirst.

A rebuke that dries the worldvv. 1–3

The LORD answers an absent audience with questions about divorce, debt, and silence. No creditor is named, but the reason for the sale is plain: iniquities and transgressions. Then comes a formidable little piece of weather: the sea dries, rivers turn to desert, fish perish of thirst, and the heavens are dressed in black.

The Servant stands fastvv. 4–9

The Servant has been given a trained tongue for the weary and an ear opened morning by morning. Rebellion does not follow. Striking, beard-tearing, scorn, and spittle do. Yet the face is set like flint, while the One who vindicates draws near and the accusers are invited to bring their case. Their grand future is less grand than it sounds: they will wear out like a garment, and moths will finish the matter.

The fire that gives no safe lightvv. 10–11

The final word separates those who fear the LORD and obey His Servant from those who kindle their own fire and parade about by its glow. That homemade illumination receives a remarkably poor destination: the fire-kindlers lie down in a place of torment.

  1. Isa 50:1This is what the LORD says: “Where is your mother’s certificate of divorce with which I sent her away? Or to which of My creditors did I sell you? Look, you were sold for your iniquities, and for your transgressions your mother was sent away.

  2. Isa 50:2Why was no one there when I arrived? Why did no one answer when I called? Is My hand too short to redeem you? Or do I lack the strength to deliver you? Behold, My rebuke dries up the sea; I turn the rivers into a desert; the fish rot for lack of water and die of thirst.

  3. Isa 50:3I clothe the heavens in black and make sackcloth their covering.”

  4. Isa 50:4The Lord GOD has given Me the tongue of discipleship, to sustain the weary with a word. He awakens Me morning by morning; He awakens My ear to listen as a disciple.

  5. Isa 50:5The Lord GOD has opened My ears, and I have not been rebellious, nor have I turned back.

  6. Isa 50:6I offered My back to those who struck Me, and My cheeks to those who tore out My beard. I did not hide My face from scorn and spittle.

  7. Isa 50:7Because the Lord GOD helps Me, I have not been disgraced; therefore I have set My face like flint, and I know that I will not be put to shame.

  8. Isa 50:8The One who vindicates Me is near. Who will dare to contend with Me? Let us confront each other! Who has a case against Me? Let him approach Me!

  9. Isa 50:9Surely the Lord GOD helps Me. Who is there to condemn Me? See, they will all wear out like a garment; the moths will devour them.

  10. Isa 50:10Who among you fears the LORD and obeys the voice of His Servant? Who among you walks in darkness and has no light? Let him trust in the name of the LORD; let him lean on his God.

  11. Isa 50:11Behold, all you who kindle a fire, who array yourselves with firebrands, walk in the light of your fire and of the firebrands you have lit! This is what you will receive from My hand: You will lie down in a place of torment.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
