Every verse links to the people and places named in it, and to the passages readers connect it with.

The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

A eunuch who fears being a dry tree is promised a name better than sons and daughters—and then the LORD invites the beasts to supper.

A name that will not be cut offvv. 1–8

The chapter begins with justice, right conduct, Sabbath-keeping, and the approaching revelation of the LORD’s righteousness. Then the doors widen. The foreigner joined to the LORD is not to say that the LORD will exclude him, and the eunuch is not to call himself a dry tree. To eunuchs who keep the Sabbaths, choose what pleases the LORD, and hold fast to the covenant, the LORD promises a memorial and a name better than sons and daughters—an everlasting name that will not be cut off. Foreigners who join themselves to the LORD are brought to the holy mountain; their offerings are accepted on the altar, and the house is called a house of prayer for all the nations. The LORD, who gathers Israel’s dispersed, announces that others besides those already gathered will be gathered too.

The watchmen who cannot barkvv. 9–12

Immediately after that promise of gathering, the beasts of the field and forest are summoned to eat greedily. The chapter does not say what has been laid out for them, which gives the invitation a wonderfully abrupt edge. Israel’s watchmen are blind, oblivious, and mute dogs that cannot bark; they are also shepherds with no discernment, each turning to his own way and seeking his own gain. Their grand plan is refreshment now and a better tomorrow: wine, strong drink, and an optimism with its sleeves rolled up.

  1. Isa 56:1This is what the LORD says: “Maintain justice and do what is right, for My salvation is coming soon, and My righteousness will be revealed.

  2. Isa 56:2Blessed is the man who does this, and the son of man who holds it fast, who keeps the Sabbath without profaning it and keeps his hand from doing any evil.”

  3. Isa 56:3Let no foreigner who has joined himself to the LORD say, “The LORD will utterly exclude me from His people.” And let the eunuch not say, “I am but a dry tree.”

  4. Isa 56:4For this is what the LORD says: “To the eunuchs who keep My Sabbaths, who choose what pleases Me and hold fast to My covenant—

  5. Isa 56:5I will give them, in My house and within My walls, a memorial and a name better than that of sons and daughters. I will give them an everlasting name that will not be cut off.

  6. Isa 56:6And the foreigners who join themselves to the LORD to minister to Him, to love the name of the LORD, and to be His servants—all who keep the Sabbath without profaning it and who hold fast to My covenant—

  7. Isa 56:7I will bring them to My holy mountain and make them joyful in My house of prayer. Their burnt offerings and sacrifices will be accepted on My altar, for My house will be called a house of prayer for all the nations.”

  8. Isa 56:8Thus declares the Lord GOD, who gathers the dispersed of Israel: “I will gather to them still others besides those already gathered.”

  9. Isa 56:9Come, all you beasts of the field; eat greedily, all you beasts of the forest.

  10. Isa 56:10Israel’s watchmen are blind, they are all oblivious; they are all mute dogs, they cannot bark; they are dreamers lying around, loving to slumber.

  11. Isa 56:11Like ravenous dogs, they are never satisfied. They are shepherds with no discernment; they all turn to their own way, each one seeking his own gain:

  12. Isa 56:12“Come, let me get the wine, let us imbibe the strong drink, and tomorrow will be like today, only far better!”

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
