The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

The city is breached, and the first thing Babylon’s officials do inside is sit in the Middle Gate.

The city falls, and the king is made to see itvv. 1–10

Nebuchadnezzar lays siege to Jerusalem, and on the appointed day the city is breached. Zedekiah and his soldiers slip out by night through the king’s garden and the gate between the two walls, taking the road towards the Arabah; the Chaldeans pursue them all the way to the plains of Jericho. At Riblah, Nebuchadnezzar judges Zedekiah, kills his sons before his eyes, puts out his eyes, and sends him in bronze chains to Babylon. Jerusalem is burned and its walls broken down, while Nebuzaradan carries away the people who remain—except for the poor, who are left vineyards and fields. A remarkably thorough change of scenery, with agriculture included.

Jeremiah is handed over, and Ebed-melech is promised a lifevv. 11–18

Nebuchadnezzar gives orders that Jeremiah is to be protected and allowed whatever he says. Nebuzaradan, Nebushazban, Nergal-sharezer, and the Babylonian captains bring Jeremiah out of the courtyard of the guard and turn him over to Gedaliah son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan, to take him home; Jeremiah remains among his own people. Then the word of the LORD comes to him for Ebed-melech the Cushite: the city will suffer, but Ebed-melech will not fall into the hands of the men he fears. His life is treated as the one piece of spoil that escapes the wreckage.

Berean Standard Bible, public domain. Names the Hebrew and Greek put in the verse link to the person, place or people they name; the address beside each verse is a link to that verse, which is what a reader copies and shares.

  1. Jer 39:1In the ninth year of Zedekiah king of Judah, in the tenth month, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon marched against Jerusalem with his entire army and laid siege to the city.

  2. Jer 39:2And on the ninth day of the fourth month of Zedekiah’s eleventh year, the city was breached.

  3. Jer 39:3Then all the officials of the king of Babylon entered and sat in the Middle Gate: Nergal-sharezer of Samgar, Nebo-sarsekim the Rabsaris, Nergal-sharezer the Rabmag, and all the rest of the officials of the king of Babylon.

  4. Jer 39:4When Zedekiah king of Judah and all the soldiers saw them, they fled. They left the city at night by way of the king’s garden, through the gate between the two walls, and they went out along the route to the Arabah.

  5. Jer 39:5But the army of the Chaldeans pursued them and overtook Zedekiah in the plains of Jericho. They seized him and brought him up to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon at Riblah in the land of Hamath, where he pronounced judgment on him.

  6. Jer 39:6There at Riblah the king of Babylon slaughtered the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes, and he also killed all the nobles of Judah.

  7. Jer 39:7Then he put out Zedekiah’s eyes and bound him with bronze chains to take him to Babylon.

  8. Jer 39:8The Chaldeans set fire to the palace of the king and to the houses of the people, and they broke down the walls of Jerusalem.

  9. Jer 39:9Then Nebuzaradan captain of the guard carried away to Babylon the remnant of the people who had remained in the city, along with the deserters who had defected to him.

  10. Jer 39:10But Nebuzaradan left behind in the land of Judah some of the poor people who had no property, and at that time he gave them vineyards and fields.

  11. Jer 39:11Now Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had given orders about Jeremiah through Nebuzaradan captain of the guard, saying,

  12. Jer 39:12“Take him, look after him, and do not let any harm come to him; do for him whatever he says.”

  13. Jer 39:13So Nebuzaradan captain of the guard, Nebushazban the Rabsaris, Nergal-sharezer the Rabmag, and all the captains of the king of Babylon

  14. Jer 39:14had Jeremiah brought from the courtyard of the guard, and they turned him over to Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, to take him home. So Jeremiah remained among his own people.

  15. Jer 39:15And while Jeremiah had been confined in the courtyard of the guard, the word of the LORD had come to him:

  16. Jer 39:16“Go and tell Ebed-melech the Cushite that this is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: ‘I am about to fulfill My words against this city for harm and not for good, and on that day they will be fulfilled before your eyes.

  17. Jer 39:17But I will deliver you on that day, declares the LORD, and you will not be delivered into the hands of the men whom you fear.

  18. Jer 39:18For I will surely rescue you so that you do not fall by the sword. Because you have trusted in Me, you will escape with your life like a spoil of war, declares the LORD.’”

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
