Job remembers being poured out like milk and curdled like cheese, then asks why the hands that made him should turn round and destroy him.
A prosecution no mortal could understandvv. 1–7
Job loathes his life, but he will not swallow his complaint. He addresses God directly, asking why he is prosecuted, and whether the maker of human beings has begun judging with human eyes and mortal patience. The accusation is almost comically impossible: God knows Job is not guilty, yet there is no deliverance from God’s hand.
The maker turns against the madevv. 8–17
Job recalls the astonishingly homely business of his making: poured out like milk, curdled like cheese, then clothed with skin and flesh and assembled with bones and sinews. Life and care were granted to him, yet behind them he imagines a concealed purpose. If guilty, woe; if righteous, still no raised head. The case has become a trap with both doors locked, while witnesses and hardships arrive in waves.
A country where darkness has the last wordvv. 18–22
Job asks why he was brought from the womb at all, wishing instead for a swift passage from womb to grave. His days are few, and he asks for a little comfort before departing to a land from which nobody returns. It is not merely dark there: it is a land of gloom, deep shadow, disorder, and a peculiar sort of light that behaves exactly like darkness.

Job 10:1“I loathe my own life; I will express my complaint and speak in the bitterness of my soul.
Job 10:2I will say to God: Do not condemn me! Let me know why You prosecute me.
Job 10:3Does it please You to oppress me, to reject the work of Your hands and favor the schemes of the wicked?
Job 10:4Do You have eyes of flesh? Do You see as man sees?
Job 10:5Are Your days like those of a mortal, or Your years like those of a man,
Job 10:6that You should seek my iniquity and search out my sin—
Job 10:7though You know that I am not guilty, and there is no deliverance from Your hand?
Job 10:8Your hands shaped me and altogether formed me. Would You now turn and destroy me?
Job 10:9Please remember that You molded me like clay. Would You now return me to dust?
Job 10:10Did You not pour me out like milk, and curdle me like cheese?
Job 10:11You clothed me with skin and flesh, and knit me together with bones and sinews.
Job 10:12You have granted me life and loving devotion, and Your care has preserved my spirit.
Job 10:13Yet You concealed these things in Your heart, and I know that this was in Your mind:
Job 10:14If I sinned, You would take note, and would not acquit me of my iniquity.
Job 10:15If I am guilty, woe to me! And even if I am righteous, I cannot lift my head. I am full of shame and aware of my affliction.
Job 10:16Should I hold my head high, You would hunt me like a lion, and again display Your power against me.
Job 10:17You produce new witnesses against me and multiply Your anger toward me. Hardships assault me in wave after wave.
Job 10:18Why then did You bring me from the womb? Oh, that I had died, and no eye had seen me!
Job 10:19If only I had never come to be, but had been carried from the womb to the grave.
Job 10:20Are my days not few? Withdraw from me, that I may have a little comfort,
Job 10:21before I go—never to return—to a land of darkness and gloom,
Job 10:22to a land of utter darkness, of deep shadow and disorder, where even the light is like darkness.”
