What happens here
Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.
A slacker can bury his hand in the dish and leave it there, defeated by the final inch between supper and mouth.
The strange arithmetic of statusvv. 1–12
Integrity outranks polished folly, and zeal without knowledge merely hurries in the wrong direction. Wealth gathers friends as if by magnetism, while poverty leaves even brothers and friends conspicuously absent. The prince attracts petitioners, the gift giver attracts friends, and the false witness attracts punishment. Then comes the startling social spectacle: luxury already looks ridiculous on a fool, but a slave ruling princes is worse still. A king's rage roars like a lion; his favor settles like dew.
Household weather and the LORD's ledgervv. 13–23
The household now supplies the imagery: a foolish son ruins his father, a quarrelsome wife drips without pause, and inherited houses and wealth are set beside the prudent wife who comes from the LORD. Laziness brings sleep and hunger; kindness to the poor is entered as a loan to the LORD, with repayment promised. Sons are disciplined while hope remains, angry men are allowed to pay their own penalties, and counsel is gathered against the many plans of the heart. Through it all, the purpose of the LORD is the one plan that prevails.
The hand in the dishvv. 24–29
The slacker receives the chapter's most wonderfully exact portrait: his hand is in the dish, yet supper remains somehow beyond him. The mocker is dealt with for the benefit of the simple, while the discerning man needs only rebuke to gain knowledge. A son who assaults his father or evicts his mother brings shame, and anyone who stops hearing instruction strays from knowledge. At the end, corrupt witnesses mock justice, wicked mouths swallow iniquity, and judgments and beatings wait in their appointed places.
