The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

A lizard small enough to catch by hand turns up in the palaces of kings, where it has plainly found a way to prosper without a throne.

Agur’s burdenvv. 1–10

Agur son of Jakeh declares his burden to Ithiel in a mood of magnificent weariness: he is ignorant, without learned wisdom, and without knowledge of the Holy One. Then come questions vast enough to make a person look up from the page: who has gathered the wind, bound the waters, and established the ends of the earth—and what are the name of God and the name of His Son? Having reached the edge of what he knows, Agur asks for two modest mercies: truth instead of deceit, and neither poverty nor riches, but bread enough for his portion. The reason is briskly stated. Too much may make him ask, ‘Who is the LORD?’; too little may make him steal. Even a servant is not to be slandered to his master, since the curse may return carrying guilt.

The leech, the lizard, and the rest of the cataloguevv. 11–33

The observations now arrive in little processions. There is a generation that curses its parents, a generation clean in its own eyes but not in its filth, and a generation whose teeth are swords. The leech appears with two daughters, both called Give, ushering in Sheol, the barren womb, thirsty land, and fire—four things that never say enough. Eagles, snakes, ships, and a man with a maiden make up a quartet too wonderful for Agur to understand, while the adulteress eats, wipes her mouth, and declares herself innocent. The earth trembles beneath four unsettled arrangements: a servant made king, a fool filled with food, an unloved woman married, and a maidservant taking her mistress’s place. Then the small creatures offer their quiet lessons: ants store food, rock badgers build in rocks, locusts march without a king, and a hand-sized lizard appears in royal palaces. A lion, a strutting rooster, a he-goat, and a king surrounded by his army finish the parade. At the end, foolish self-exaltation and plotted evil are met with a hand over the mouth, since stirred anger produces strife as surely as churned milk produces butter.

  23. Prov 30:23an unloved woman who marries, and a maidservant who supplants her mistress.

  24. Prov 30:24Four things on earth are small, yet they are exceedingly wise:

  25. Prov 30:25The ants are creatures of little strength, yet they store up their food in the summer;

  26. Prov 30:26the rock badgers are creatures of little power, yet they make their homes in the rocks;

  27. Prov 30:27the locusts have no king, yet they all advance in formation;

  28. Prov 30:28and the lizard can be caught in one’s hands, yet it is found in the palaces of kings.

  29. Prov 30:29There are three things that are stately in their stride, and four that are impressive in their walk:

  30. Prov 30:30a lion, mighty among beasts, refusing to retreat before anything;

  31. Prov 30:31a strutting rooster; a he-goat; and a king with his army around him.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
