Psalms 75

Every verse links to the people and places named in it, and to the passages readers connect it with.

The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

East, west, and the desert are all dismissed as sources of exaltation; the poem leaves the missing direction politely unexplained.

The judge with the foaming cupvv. 1–8

The song opens with thanks because God's Name is near, while the people declare His wondrous works. Then God speaks: judgment will come at the chosen time, and even a quaking earth rests on His bearing up its pillars. The proud are told not to boast, and the wicked not to lift their horn toward heaven with an outstretched neck. Exaltation comes from none of the named quarters or the desert, but from God, who brings one down and raises another. The punishment arrives in a cup—foaming wine, mixed with spices—which all the wicked of the earth must drink to the dregs. It is a remarkably well-appointed cup for such an unhappy appointment.

The final songvv. 9–10

The speaker answers the cup and the judgment with a vow to proclaim God forever and sing praise to the God of Jacob. The closing declaration returns to the horns: those of the wicked will be cut off, while the horns of the righteous will be exalted. The poem began with the people declaring wondrous works and ends with horns sorted into two rather different futures.
