Genesis 22

Every verse links to the people and places named in it, and to the passages readers connect it with.

The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

Abraham carries the knife, Isaac carries the wood, and the answer to Isaac’s question arrives as a ram with its horns caught in a thicket.

The mountain and the thicketvv. 1–19

God tests Abraham with an instruction of terrifying precision: take Isaac to Moriah and offer him there. Abraham rises early, brings two servants, and tells them that “the boy and I” will return, though the chapter leaves that sentence hanging in the air. Isaac carries the wood while Abraham carries the fire and knife, a grim little division of labour. When Isaac asks where the lamb is, Abraham says God will provide it. At the appointed place Abraham builds the altar, binds Isaac, and reaches for the knife—whereupon the angel of the LORD calls from heaven and stops the hand. The provision is not a lamb but a ram, caught by its horns in a thicket, and Abraham offers it in Isaac’s place. The mountain receives a name: The LORD Will Provide. From heaven comes a further promise of descendants, enemies’ gates, and blessing for all nations through Abraham’s offspring. Then Abraham returns to the servants, and they all go back to Beersheba.

The family reportvv. 20–24

Then, with the altar episode scarcely cooled, the chapter turns to Nahor’s household. Milcah has borne eight sons: Uz, Buz, Kemuel, Chesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph, and Bethuel; Kemuel is noted as the father of Aram, and Bethuel as the father of Rebekah. Reumah, Nahor’s concubine, has four sons of her own—Tebah, Gaham, Tahash, and Maacah. The narrative ends not with a flourish but with a family list, which is a perfectly respectable way for Genesis to leave a door ajar.

  1. Gen 22:1Some time later God tested Abraham and said to him, “Abraham!” “Here I am,” he answered.

  2. Gen 22:2“Take your son,” God said, “your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah. Offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains, which I will show you.”

  3. Gen 22:3So Abraham got up early the next morning, saddled his donkey, and took along two of his servants and his son Isaac. He split the wood for a burnt offering and set out for the place God had designated.

  4. Gen 22:4On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance.

  5. Gen 22:5“Stay here with the donkey,” Abraham told his servants. “The boy and I will go over there to worship, and then we will return to you.”

  6. Gen 22:6Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac. He himself carried the fire and the sacrificial knife, and the two of them walked on together.

  7. Gen 22:7Then Isaac said to his father Abraham, “My father!” “Here I am, my son,” he replied. “The fire and the wood are here,” said Isaac, “but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?”

  8. Gen 22:8Abraham answered, “God Himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” And the two walked on together.

  9. Gen 22:9When they arrived at the place God had designated, Abraham built the altar there and arranged the wood. He bound his son Isaac and placed him on the altar, atop the wood.

  10. Gen 22:10Then Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to slaughter his son.

  11. Gen 22:11Just then the angel of the LORD called out to him from heaven, “Abraham, Abraham!” “Here I am,” he replied.

  12. Gen 22:12“Do not lay a hand on the boy or do anything to him,” said the angel, “for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your only son from me.”

  13. Gen 22:13Then Abraham looked up and saw behind him a ram in a thicket, caught by its horns. So he went and took the ram and offered it as a burnt offering in place of his son.

  14. Gen 22:14And Abraham called that place The LORD Will Provide. So to this day it is said, “On the mountain of the LORD it will be provided.”

  15. Gen 22:15And the angel of the LORD called to Abraham from heaven a second time,

  16. Gen 22:16saying, “By Myself I have sworn, declares the LORD, that because you have done this and have not withheld your only son,

  17. Gen 22:17I will surely bless you, and I will multiply your descendants like the stars in the sky and the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will possess the gates of their enemies.

  18. Gen 22:18And through your offspring all nations of the earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.”

  19. Gen 22:19Abraham went back to his servants, and they got up and set out together for Beersheba. And Abraham settled in Beersheba.

  20. Gen 22:20Some time later, Abraham was told, “Milcah has also borne sons to your brother Nahor:

  21. Gen 22:21Uz the firstborn, his brother Buz, Kemuel (the father of Aram),

  22. Gen 22:22Chesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph, and Bethuel.”

  23. Gen 22:23And Bethuel became the father of Rebekah. Milcah bore these eight sons to Abraham’s brother Nahor.

  24. Gen 22:24Moreover, Nahor’s concubine, whose name was Reumah, bore Tebah, Gaham, Tahash, and Maacah.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
