Description

Who was Ahaziah?

In the words of STEPBible TIPNR:

Ahaziah, also known as Jehoahaz, was the son of Jehoram and Athaliah, the daughter of Ahab. He became the sixth king of Judah at the age of 22 and reigned for one year in Jerusalem. Ahaziah did evil in the sight of the Lord, walking in the ways of the house of Ahab, as his mother Athaliah counseled him to do wickedly. (2Ki.8.25-27; 2Ch.22.1-4)

Ahaziah joined his uncle Joram, king of Israel, in a battle against Hazael, king of Syria, at Ramoth Gilead. Joram was wounded and returned to Jezreel to recover. Ahaziah went to visit Joram in Jezreel, where he encountered Jehu, who had been anointed to destroy the house of Ahab. Jehu pursued Ahaziah, and Ahaziah was wounded at the ascent of Gur. He fled to Megiddo, where he died. His servants brought his body to Jerusalem, and he was buried with his fathers in the City of David. (2Ki.8.28-29; 9.16,21-28; 2Ch.22.5-9)

After Ahaziah's death, his mother Athaliah seized the throne and destroyed all the royal heirs, except for Joash, who was hidden by Jehosheba. (2Ki.11.1-3; 2Ch.22.10-12) The short reign of Ahaziah was marked by the influence of his mother Athaliah and the house of Ahab, leading to his downfall and the near extinction of the Davidic line.

Relations

Direct connections

Every entity the graph places in a stated relation with this one, grouped by the kind of link. Each relation is authored once and its inverse derived, so both ends always agree. Rows marked “registry” come from the identity spine rather than from a verse, and a row marked “which bearer is the source’s decision” is one where the name could have meant more than one person. The last group is not a relation at all — it counts the events two entities stand in together.

How the graph connects Ahaziah 10 of 15 entities the graph connects to Ahaziah, in 2 groups: kinship 2, events 8. Kinship, company and ground are stated relations; events counts the acts two entities stand in together and is not a relation. Each mark is sized by how many verses name that entity and labelled with the link and the count, so the grouping and the size are both readable without colour. Places

Where this happens

The places the claims about this person reach, drawn where the gazetteer locates them. A point is where a row puts them and never where tradition does; no line joins two points, because the rows state where and not in what order.

Where the story of Ahaziah happens All 6 places the claims about Ahaziah reach, on a map of the world the text moves through, framed to them: Jerusalem, Jezreel, Ramoth, Gur, Megiddo, Samaria. Each dot is a coordinate from the gazetteer, sized by how many rows put Ahaziah there. The coastline is a modern one, simplified; no border, road or settlement of any period is drawn, and no line joins two points, because the rows state where and not in what order.JerusalemJezreelRamothGurMegiddoSamaria

Where Ahaziah is named

Every book of the corpus in the order it is read, each as wide as the chapters it holds. A bar is the verses of that book which write the name, and the flat stretches are as much of the answer as the bars.

26 verses across 3 of 66 books; 63 write the name nowhere. Named in 2 Kings (15), 1 Chronicles (1) and 2 Chronicles (10).

Ahaziah is named in 26 verses, and the name is written 33 times in them — occurrences of the name in the Hebrew or Greek, counted in the versification of the Berean Standard Bible (v5.7). Every book of the corpus is drawn, its width its share of the 1,189 chapters. 63 of the 66 books never write it. A verse that tells of this subject without writing the name is not counted here.
