Description
Who was Ezra?
Ezra was a prominent Jewish priest and scribe who lived during the Persian period. He was a descendant of Aaron, the first high priest of Israel (Ezr.7.1-5). Ezra was known for his devotion to the study and teaching of the Law of Moses (Ezr.7.6, 10). He led a group of Jewish exiles from Babylon to Jerusalem in the seventh year of King Artaxerxes of Persia (Ezr.7.7-8). Upon arriving in Jerusalem, Ezra discovered that many of the Jews, including priests and Levites, had intermarried with the pagan peoples of the land (Ezr.9.1-2). Ezra prayed and confessed the sins of the people, leading to a spiritual reformation and the dissolution of the mixed marriages (Ezra 10). Ezra also played a significant role in teaching the Law to the people and leading them in a covenant renewal ceremony (Nehemiah 8). He worked closely with Nehemiah, the governor of Judah, in rebuilding Jerusalem and restoring the spiritual life of the Jewish community (Neh.12.26, 36).
Relations
Direct connections
Every entity the graph places in a stated relation with this one, grouped by the kind of link. Each relation is authored once and its inverse derived, so both ends always agree. Rows marked “registry” come from the identity spine rather than from a verse, and a row marked “which bearer is the source’s decision” is one where the name could have meant more than one person. The last group is not a relation at all — it counts the events two entities stand in together.
The 10 best-attested of 15 are drawn. All 15 are listed below.
Places
Where this happens
The places the claims about this person reach, drawn where the gazetteer locates them. A point is where a row puts them and never where tradition does; no line joins two points, because the rows state where and not in what order.
The pattern
Where Ezra is named
Every book of the corpus in the order it is read, each as wide as the chapters it holds. A bar is the verses of that book which write the name, and the flat stretches are as much of the answer as the bars.
22 verses across 2 of 66 books; 64 write the name nowhere. Named in Ezra (13) and Nehemiah (9).

Chapter by chapter
Atlas's reading of each chapter this person appears in, in canonical order. One line per chapter, and each leads to the whole of it.
- Ezra 7Ezra came up from Babylon, studied and practised the Law, taught it in Israel, and gathered the leaders to return with him.
- Ezra 9Ezra tore his tunic and cloak, pulled hair from his head and beard, sat in horror until the evening offering, and prayed with his hands spread before God.
- Ezra 10Ezra prayed, wept, called the assembly to account, and directed the investigation into the marriages.
- Nehemiah 8Ezra brings out the Book of the Law, reads it aloud from daybreak until noon, blesses the LORD, and continues reading through the feast.
