Description

Who was Joseph?

In the words of STEPBible TIPNR:

Joseph was the husband of Mary and the earthly father of Jesus Christ. He was a descendant of David (Mat.1.16, 20; Luk.1.27; 2.4) and lived in Nazareth (Luk.2.4). Joseph was betrothed to Mary when she was found to be pregnant by the Holy Spirit (Mat.1.18; Luk.1.27). Being a righteous man, he planned to divorce her quietly, but an angel appeared to him in a dream, telling him to take Mary as his wife and name the child Jesus (Mat.1.19-21, 24-25). Joseph obeyed and took care of Mary and Jesus. He was present at Jesus' birth in Bethlehem (Luk.2.4-7, 16) and later took his family to Egypt to escape Herod's persecution (Mat.2.13-15, 19-23). Joseph is last mentioned in the Gospels when Jesus was 12 years old, and the family visited Jerusalem for the Passover (Luk.2.41-51). He is referred to as Jesus' father (Luk.2.33, 48; 4.22; Jhn.1.45; 6.42) and was a carpenter by trade (Mat.13.55). Joseph is not mentioned during Jesus' adult ministry, suggesting he may have died before that time.

Relations

Direct connections

Every entity the graph places in a stated relation with this one, grouped by the kind of link. Each relation is authored once and its inverse derived, so both ends always agree. Rows marked “registry” come from the identity spine rather than from a verse, and a row marked “which bearer is the source’s decision” is one where the name could have meant more than one person. The last group is not a relation at all — it counts the events two entities stand in together.

How the graph connects Joseph 10 of 17 entities the graph connects to Joseph, in 2 groups: kinship 3, events 7. Kinship, company and ground are stated relations; events counts the acts two entities stand in together and is not a relation. Each mark is sized by how many verses name that entity and labelled with the link and the count, so the grouping and the size are both readable without colour. Distance from the centre carries nothing.JesusFather of · 5 events · 1,160 versesDavidDescendant of · 964 versesMaryPartner of · 4 events · 20 versesKinshipIsrael2 events · 2,578 versesEgypt3 events · 649 versesGalilee1 event · 72 versesBethlehem1 event · 53 versesJudea2 events · 53 versesNazareth3 events · 30 versesDream1 event · 28 versesEventsJoseph

Where this happens

The places the claims about this person reach, drawn where the gazetteer locates them. A point is where a row puts them and never where tradition does; no line joins two points, because the rows state where and not in what order.

Where the story of Joseph happens All 4 places the claims about Joseph reach, on a map of the world the text moves through, framed to them: Bethlehem, Nazareth, Egypt, Judea. Each dot is a coordinate from the gazetteer, sized by how many rows put Joseph there. The coastline is a modern one, simplified; no border, road or settlement of any period is drawn, and no line joins two points, because the rows state where and not in what order.BethlehemNazarethEgyptJudea

Where Joseph is named

Every book of the corpus in the order it is read, each as wide as the chapters it holds. A bar is the verses of that book which write the name, and the flat stretches are as much of the answer as the bars.

17 verses across 3 of 66 books; 63 write the name nowhere. Named in Matthew (8), Luke (7) and John (2).

Joseph is named in 17 verses — occurrences of the name in the Hebrew or Greek, counted in the versification of the Berean Standard Bible (v5.7). Every book of the corpus is drawn, its width its share of the 1,189 chapters. 63 of the 66 books never write it. A verse that tells of this subject without writing the name is not counted here.
