The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

Ephraim’s house loses two sons to a livestock raid, mourns for many days, and then gives a later son the name Beriah because tragedy has come upon the house. In the same family roll, his daughter Sheerah appears as a builder of three settlements, while Zelophehad is remembered for having only daughters.

Families counted for battlevv. 1–19

Issachar’s line begins with four sons and quickly becomes a great tally of family heads and mighty men. Benjamin’s three sons likewise unfold into households, with Bela, Becher, and Jediael each carrying a long branch of names. Then comes Zelophehad, tucked into Machir’s family with the small but striking note that he had only daughters. Machir’s sister Maacah gives birth to Peresh and Sheresh, while Hammolecheth gives birth to Ishhod, Abiezer, and Mahlah; the genealogy is chiefly a procession of sons, but now and then a daughter steps neatly into view.

Ephraim’s grief and Sheerah’s townsvv. 20–29

Ephraim’s descendants run down a chain of fathers and sons until Ezer and Elead go down to Gath to steal livestock, and the natives kill them. Ephraim mourns for many days; his relatives come to comfort him; then another son is born and receives the name Beriah, a name carrying the household’s tragedy plainly in its wake. His daughter Sheerah is singled out as a builder of Lower and Upper Beth-horon and Uzzen-sheerah, with no explanation offered and no need of one to make the notice arresting. The family line continues to Joshua, while its holdings spread through Bethel, Naaran, Gezer, Shechem, and the settlements along Manasseh’s border.

Asher’s broad last branchvv. 30–40

Asher’s family begins with four sons and a sister, Serah, then branches through Beriah, Heber, Japhlet, Shemer, Helem, Zophah, Jether, and Ulla. The names arrive in such abundance that the family tree acquires the air of a crowded doorway, yet the closing description gathers them together as heads of families, choice and mighty men of valor, and chiefs among leaders. The final count is 26,000 men fit for battle.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
