The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

Korah’s followers vanish into earth and fire, and then the chapter pauses to make sure nobody thinks Korah’s family vanished with them.

A census with a survivor in the marginvv. 1–51

After the plague, the LORD orders Moses and Eleazar to count Israel by ancestral clans, beginning with Reuben and moving through the tribes in a long roll of names and numbers. The list carries one remarkable interruption: Dathan and Abiram rebelled with Korah’s followers, the earth swallowed them, and fire consumed 250 men—yet “the line of Korah did not die out.” A census fond of fathers and sons also stops for Zelophehad, who had no sons but five daughters, all named: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. By the end, the men of Israel number 601,730, which is a great many names to fit beneath one sky.

Inheritance, Levites, and the missing generationvv. 52–65

The numbers now acquire parcels of land: large tribes are to receive more, small tribes less, with the inheritance divided by lot. The Levites are counted separately, including the Kohathite family of Amram, Jochebed’s children Aaron, Moses, and Miriam, and Aaron’s sons. Nadab and Abihu are mentioned with the stark economy of a family register: they died after offering unauthorized fire. Finally the chapter looks back at the earlier census in the Wilderness of Sinai. Not one of that counted generation remains, except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
