Description

Who was Joshua?

In the words of STEPBible TIPNR:

Joshua, the son of Nun, was a prominent figure in the Old Testament who served as Moses' assistant and later succeeded him as the leader of the Israelites. He was from the tribe of Ephraim (Num.13.8) and was originally named Hoshea, but Moses changed his name to Joshua (Num.13.16). Joshua was one of the twelve spies sent to explore the land of Canaan (Num.13.8), and he and Caleb were the only ones who brought back a positive report and encouraged the people to trust God (Num.14.6-9). As a result, Joshua and Caleb were the only adults from their generation permitted to enter the Promised Land (Num.14.30, 38).

Before Moses' death, God appointed Joshua to succeed him as the leader of Israel (Num.27.18-23; Deu.31.7-8, 14, 23). After Moses' death, Joshua led the Israelites across the Jordan River and into the land of Canaan (Joshua 1-4). He oversaw the conquest of Jericho (Joshua 6), Ai (Joshua 8), and numerous other cities and territories (Joshua 10-12). Joshua also led the Israelites in renewing their covenant with God (Jos.8.30-35; 24.1-28).

Under Joshua's leadership, the land of Canaan was divided among the tribes of Israel as their inheritance (Joshua 13-21). In his old age, Joshua gave a farewell address to the Israelites, encouraging them to remain faithful to God (Joshua 23-24). He died at the age of 110 and was buried in his inheritance at Timnath-serah (Jos.24.29-30; Jdg.2.8-9).

Joshua is remembered as a courageous leader, a faithful servant of God, and a key figure in Israel's history who led the people into the Promised Land and helped establish them as a nation.

Relations

Direct connections

Every entity the graph places in a stated relation with this one, grouped by the kind of link. Each relation is authored once and its inverse derived, so both ends always agree. Rows marked “registry” come from the identity spine rather than from a verse, and a row marked “which bearer is the source’s decision” is one where the name could have meant more than one person. The last group is not a relation at all — it counts the events two entities stand in together.

How the graph connects Joshua 10 of 13 entities the graph connects to Joshua, in 2 groups: kinship 1, events 9. Kinship, company and ground are stated relations; events counts the acts two entities stand in together and is not a relation. Each mark is sized by how many verses name that entity and labelled with the link and the count, so the grouping and the size are both readable without colour. Distance from the centre carries nothing.NunChild of · 30 versesKinshipIsrael69 events · 2,578 versesMoses22 events · 786 versesJordan9 events · 179 versesEleazar10 events · 61 versesJericho7 events · 61 versesHebron6 events · 57 versesGilgal6 events · 38 versesShiloh6 events · 36 versesAi10 events · 33 versesEventsJoshua

Places

Where this happens

The places the claims about this person reach, drawn where the gazetteer locates them. A point is where a row puts them and never where tradition does; no line joins two points, because the rows state where and not in what order.

Where the story of Joshua happens All 24 places the claims about Joshua reach, on a map of the world the text moves through, framed to them: Gilgal, Ai, Shiloh, Jericho, Jordan, Kadesh, Makkedah, Canaan, Eglon, Gaash, Lachish, Libnah, Negeb, Shephelah, Timnath-heres, Zin, Achor_Valley, Addar, Bethel, Halak_Mount, Hebron, Rephidim, Salt_Sea, Shittim. Each dot is a coordinate from the gazetteer, sized by how many rows put Joshua there. The coastline is a modern one, simplified; no border, road or settlement of any period is drawn, and no line joins two points, because the rows state where and not in what order.GilgalAiJordanKadeshMakkedahCanaanEglonNegebZinAddarRephidimSalt_Sea

Where Joshua is named

Every book of the corpus in the order it is read, each as wide as the chapters it holds. A bar is the verses of that book which write the name, and the flat stretches are as much of the answer as the bars.

189 verses across 10 of 66 books; 56 write the name nowhere. Named in Exodus (7), Numbers (11), Deuteronomy (9), Joshua (151), Judges (6), 1 Kings (1), 1 Chronicles (1), Nehemiah (1), Acts (1) and Hebrews (1).

Joshua is named in 189 verses, and the name is written 208 times in them — occurrences of the name in the Hebrew or Greek, counted in the versification of the Berean Standard Bible (v5.7). Every book of the corpus is drawn, its width its share of the 1,189 chapters. 56 of the 66 books never write it. A verse that tells of this subject without writing the name is not counted here.

One further reference is not a verse of this edition — Num.13.8,16. A Septuagint address, a bracketed reading, or a compound string the source never resolves. Counted here rather than folded into the figure.
