The chapter
What happens here
Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.
Hatred is given murder’s name before a blow appears: the brother can be slain in the heart, and eternal life has already packed its bags.
Children of God, and the awkward business of sinvv. 1–10
The passage opens with love making a startling family announcement: the Father calls people children of God, although the world does not recognise the family resemblance. What they will be has not yet been revealed; only this is known, that when Christ appears they will be like Him. Then comes the sharp edge: Christ appeared to take away sins, and anyone born of God cannot go on sinning. The sentence stands there in absolute clothing, while the surrounding lines continue to warn and distinguish. Righteousness belongs to one family, sin to another, and the devil is given the rather unappealing description of having been at it from the very start.
Cain’s old family quarrelvv. 11–18
The message heard from the beginning is love for one another, but Cain is summoned as the cautionary exhibit. He belonged to the evil one and murdered his brother because his own deeds were evil while his brother’s were righteous. The movement from hatred to murder is brisk enough to make the dictionary wince: the inward hostility receives the outward crime’s name. Love is then brought down from speech into the rather less decorative territory of action, truth, earthly possessions, and a brother in need.
The heart, the asking, and the Spiritvv. 19–24
The heart now becomes a courtroom, capable of condemning its owner; yet God is greater than the heart and knows all things. If condemnation does not prevail, confidence before God follows, along with the remarkably broad promise of receiving whatever is asked—though it arrives tethered to keeping commandments and doing what pleases God. The commandment is gathered into belief in the name of Jesus Christ and love for one another. At the close, God and the believer remain in one another, and the Spirit is the sign by which this mutual indwelling is known.

1 John 3:1Behold what manner of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God. And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know Him.
1 John 3:2Beloved, we are now children of God, and what we will be has not yet been revealed. We know that when Christ appears, we will be like Him, for we will see Him as He is.
1 John 3:3And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as Christ is pure.
1 John 3:4Everyone who practices sin practices lawlessness as well. Indeed, sin is lawlessness.
1 John 3:5But you know that Christ appeared to take away sins, and in Him there is no sin.
1 John 3:6No one who remains in Him keeps on sinning. No one who continues to sin has seen Him or known Him.
1 John 3:7Little children, let no one deceive you: The one who practices righteousness is righteous, just as Christ is righteous.
1 John 3:8The one who practices sin is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the very start. This is why the Son of God was revealed, to destroy the works of the devil.
1 John 3:9Anyone born of God refuses to practice sin, because God’s seed abides in him; he cannot go on sinning, because he has been born of God.
1 John 3:10By this the children of God are distinguished from the children of the devil: Anyone who does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is anyone who does not love his brother.
1 John 3:11This is the message you have heard from the beginning: We should love one another.
1 John 3:12Do not be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did Cain slay him? Because his own deeds were evil, while those of his brother were righteous.
1 John 3:13So do not be surprised, brothers, if the world hates you.
1 John 3:14We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love our brothers. The one who does not love remains in death.
1 John 3:15Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that eternal life does not reside in a murderer.
1 John 3:16By this we know what love is: Jesus laid down His life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers.
1 John 3:17If anyone with earthly possessions sees his brother in need, but withholds his compassion from him, how can the love of God abide in him?
1 John 3:18Little children, let us love not in word and speech, but in action and truth.
1 John 3:19And by this we will know that we belong to the truth, and will assure our hearts in His presence:
1 John 3:20Even if our hearts condemn us, God is greater than our hearts, and He knows all things.
1 John 3:21Beloved, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God,
1 John 3:22and we will receive from Him whatever we ask, because we keep His commandments and do what is pleasing in His sight.
1 John 3:23And this is His commandment: that we should believe in the name of His Son, Jesus Christ, and we should love one another just as He commanded us.
1 John 3:24Whoever keeps His commandments remains in God, and God in him. And by this we know that He remains in us: by the Spirit He has given us.

Who else the chapter reaches
Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.
Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.
Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
