The chapter
What happens here
Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.
The land receives its Sabbath only after the house of God is burned, Jerusalem’s wall is broken, and the survivors have been carried away. It is a remarkably severe sort of holiday, with the population elsewhere and the city in ashes.
Kings in remarkably short supplyvv. 1–10
The people of the land begin by making Jehoahaz king in Jerusalem, but Egypt’s king removes him after three months and sends him to Egypt. Neco installs his brother Eliakim, changes his name to Jehoiakim without the chapter offering a reason, and then Jehoiakim reigns for eleven years, doing evil and eventually being bound in bronze by Nebuchadnezzar. His son Jehoiachin succeeds him, with a reign measured out in the wonderfully exact phrase “three months and ten days”; then Nebuchadnezzar summons him to Babylon and places Zedekiah over Judah and Jerusalem.
The long refusal and the long desolationvv. 11–21
Zedekiah reigns eleven years and refuses to humble himself before Jeremiah. He rebels against Nebuchadnezzar, hardens his heart, and stands among leaders and people who defile the house of the LORD. Messengers come again and again, but their words are mocked until the king of the Chaldeans arrives: young and old alike are put to the sword, the treasures are carried to Babylon, the house of God is burned, and Jerusalem’s wall is broken down. The survivors go into exile, and only then does the land enjoy its Sabbath rest through the seventy years of desolation.
A proclamation from Persiavv. 22–23
In the first year of Cyrus, the LORD stirs the king of Persia to send a written proclamation through his kingdom. Cyrus says that the LORD, the God of heaven, has given him all the kingdoms of the earth and appointed him to build a house at Jerusalem in Judah. The chapter ends with an invitation to go up, which is a rather brisk change of scenery after the preceding fire, sword, and seventy years.

2 Chr 36:1Then the people of the land took Jehoahaz son of Josiah and made him king in Jerusalem in place of his father.
2 Chr 36:2Jehoahaz was twenty-three years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem three months.
2 Chr 36:3And the king of Egypt dethroned him in Jerusalem and imposed on Judah a levy of a hundred talents of silver and a talent of gold.
2 Chr 36:4Then Neco king of Egypt made Eliakim brother of Jehoahaz king over Judah and Jerusalem, and he changed Eliakim’s name to Jehoiakim. But Neco took Eliakim’s brother Jehoahaz and carried him off to Egypt.
2 Chr 36:5Jehoiakim was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem eleven years. And he did evil in the sight of the LORD his God.
2 Chr 36:6Then Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up against Jehoiakim and bound him with bronze shackles to take him to Babylon.
2 Chr 36:7Nebuchadnezzar also took to Babylon some of the articles from the house of the LORD, and he put them in his temple in Babylon.
2 Chr 36:8As for the rest of the acts of Jehoiakim, the abominations he committed, and all that was found against him, they are indeed written in the Book of the Kings of Israel and Judah. And his son Jehoiachin reigned in his place.
2 Chr 36:9Jehoiachin was eighteen years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem three months and ten days. And he did evil in the sight of the LORD.
2 Chr 36:10In the spring, King Nebuchadnezzar summoned Jehoiachin and brought him to Babylon, along with the articles of value from the house of the LORD. And he made Jehoiachin’s relative Zedekiah king over Judah and Jerusalem.
2 Chr 36:11Zedekiah was twenty-one years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem eleven years.
2 Chr 36:12And he did evil in the sight of the LORD his God and did not humble himself before Jeremiah the prophet, who spoke for the LORD.
2 Chr 36:13He also rebelled against King Nebuchadnezzar, who had made him swear by God. But Zedekiah stiffened his neck and hardened his heart against turning to the LORD, the God of Israel.
2 Chr 36:14Furthermore, all the leaders of the priests and the people multiplied their unfaithful deeds, following all the abominations of the nations, and they defiled the house of the LORD, which He had consecrated in Jerusalem.
2 Chr 36:15Again and again the LORD, the God of their fathers, sent word to His people through His messengers because He had compassion on them and on His dwelling place.
2 Chr 36:16But they mocked the messengers of God, despising His words and scoffing at His prophets, until the wrath of the LORD against His people was stirred up beyond remedy.
2 Chr 36:17So He brought up against them the king of the Chaldeans, who put their young men to the sword in the sanctuary, sparing neither young men nor young women, neither elderly nor infirm. God gave them all into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar,
2 Chr 36:18who carried off everything to Babylon—all the articles of the house of God, both large and small, and the treasures of the house of the LORD and of the king and his officials.
2 Chr 36:19Then the Chaldeans set fire to the house of God and broke down the wall of Jerusalem. They burned down all the palaces and destroyed every article of value.
2 Chr 36:20Those who escaped the sword were carried by Nebuchadnezzar into exile in Babylon, and they became servants to him and his sons until the kingdom of Persia came to power.
2 Chr 36:21So the land enjoyed its Sabbath rest all the days of the desolation, until seventy years were completed, in fulfillment of the word of the LORD spoken through Jeremiah.
2 Chr 36:22In the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, to fulfill the word of the LORD spoken through Jeremiah, the LORD stirred the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia to send a proclamation throughout his kingdom and to put it in writing as follows:
2 Chr 36:23“This is what Cyrus king of Persia says: ‘The LORD, the God of heaven, who has given me all the kingdoms of the earth, has appointed me to build a house for Him at Jerusalem in Judah. Whoever among you belongs to His people, may the LORD his God be with him, and may he go up.’”

Who else the chapter reaches
Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.
Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.
Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
