Every verse links to the people and places named in it, and to the passages readers connect it with.

The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

The list counts 2,499 articles, then solemnly declares 5,400, leaving the arithmetic standing like an unopened cupboard.

A royal commission in the voice of Jerusalem’s Godvv. 1–4

In the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, the LORD stirs his spirit to send a written proclamation throughout the kingdom. Cyrus says that the God of heaven, who has given him all the kingdoms of the earth, has appointed him to build the LORD’s house at Jerusalem in Judah. The survivors are invited to go, while their neighbours are instructed to furnish them with silver, gold, goods, livestock, and freewill offerings.

The people rise, and the cupboard is openedvv. 5–11

The family heads of Judah and Benjamin, together with the priests and Levites, prepare to go up because God has stirred their spirits, and their neighbours support them with gifts. Cyrus then brings out the articles that Nebuchadnezzar carried away from Jerusalem, appointing Mithredath to count them out to Sheshbazzar. The listed figures total 2,499, while the closing total is 5,400; the text offers no explanation, but Sheshbazzar carries all the articles from Babylon to Jerusalem with the exiles.

  1. Ezra 1:1In the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, to fulfill the word of the LORD spoken through Jeremiah, the LORD stirred the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia to send a proclamation throughout his kingdom and to put it in writing as follows:

  2. Ezra 1:2“This is what Cyrus king of Persia says: ‘The LORD, the God of heaven, who has given me all the kingdoms of the earth, has appointed me to build a house for Him at Jerusalem in Judah.

  3. Ezra 1:3Whoever among you belongs to His people, may his God be with him, and may he go to Jerusalem in Judah and build the house of the LORD, the God of Israel; He is the God who is in Jerusalem.

  4. Ezra 1:4And let every survivor, wherever he lives, be assisted by the men of that region with silver, gold, goods, and livestock, along with a freewill offering for the house of God in Jerusalem.’”

  5. Ezra 1:5So the family heads of Judah and Benjamin, along with the priests and Levites—everyone whose spirit God had stirred—prepared to go up and rebuild the house of the LORD in Jerusalem.

  6. Ezra 1:6And all their neighbors supported them with articles of silver and gold, with goods and livestock, and with valuables, in addition to all their freewill offerings.

  7. Ezra 1:7King Cyrus also brought out the articles belonging to the house of the LORD that Nebuchadnezzar had carried away from Jerusalem and placed in the temple of his gods.

  8. Ezra 1:8Cyrus king of Persia had them brought out by the hand of Mithredath the treasurer, who counted them out to Sheshbazzar the prince of Judah.

  9. Ezra 1:9This was the inventory: 30 gold dishes, 1,000 silver dishes, 29 silver utensils,

  10. Ezra 1:1030 gold bowls, 410 matching silver bowls, and 1,000 other articles.

  11. Ezra 1:11In all, there were 5,400 gold and silver articles. Sheshbazzar brought all these along when the exiles went up from Babylon to Jerusalem.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
