The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

A door stands open for preaching, yet Titus's absence sends the speaker away from Troas to Macedonia.

The offender is to be forgivenvv. 1–11

The speaker had resolved not to make another painful visit, and explains that the severe letter came through tears, distress, and anguish—not to grieve the Corinthians, but to show how much he loved them. Someone has caused grief, though the injury is shared only “to some degree”; the majority's punishment is now called sufficient, and the next instruction is forgiveness, comfort, and a reaffirmation of love. The test was whether they would stand firm in everything. Forgiveness is shared in the presence of Christ, lest Satan outwit them with schemes. A disciplinary scene, then, is turned around rather briskly: the culprit must not be left to drown in sorrow.

The open door and the absent Titusvv. 12–17

At Troas, the speaker finds an open door for preaching the gospel of Christ, but no peace in his spirit because Titus is not there. So the open door does not keep him: he says goodbye and goes on to Macedonia. The journey is then pictured in a most remarkable double fashion—God leads them triumphantly as captives in Christ, while through them the fragrance of knowledge spreads everywhere. The same aroma is life to some and death to others. Such a task prompts the question of qualification, before the chapter distinguishes this speech from those who peddle God's word for profit: here, speech is before God, sincere, and sent from God.

  1. 2 Cor 2:1So I made up my mind not to make another painful visit to you.

  2. 2 Cor 2:2For if I grieve you, who is left to cheer me but those whom I have grieved?

  3. 2 Cor 2:3I wrote as I did so that on my arrival I would not be grieved by those who ought to make me rejoice. I had confidence in all of you, that you would share my joy.

  4. 2 Cor 2:4For through many tears I wrote you out of great distress and anguish of heart, not to grieve you but to let you know how much I love you.

  5. 2 Cor 2:5Now if anyone has caused grief, he has not grieved me but all of you—to some degree, not to overstate it.

  6. 2 Cor 2:6The punishment imposed on him by the majority is sufficient for him.

  7. 2 Cor 2:7So instead, you ought to forgive and comfort him, so that he will not be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow.

  8. 2 Cor 2:8Therefore I urge you to reaffirm your love for him.

  9. 2 Cor 2:9My purpose in writing you was to see if you would stand the test and be obedient in everything.

  10. 2 Cor 2:10If you forgive anyone, I also forgive him. And if I have forgiven anything, I have forgiven it in the presence of Christ for your sake,

  11. 2 Cor 2:11in order that Satan should not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes.

  12. 2 Cor 2:12Now when I went to Troas to preach the gospel of Christ and a door stood open for me in the Lord,

  13. 2 Cor 2:13I had no peace in my spirit, because I did not find my brother Titus there. So I said goodbye to them and went on to Macedonia.

  14. 2 Cor 2:14But thanks be to God, who always leads us triumphantly as captives in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of Him.

  15. 2 Cor 2:15For we are to God the sweet aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing.

  16. 2 Cor 2:16To the one we are an odor that brings death, to the other a fragrance that brings life. And who is qualified for such a task?

  17. 2 Cor 2:17For we are not like so many others, who peddle the word of God for profit. On the contrary, in Christ we speak before God with sincerity, as men sent from God.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
