What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

The dragon’s attempt to drown the woman ends with the earth opening its mouth and swallowing the river—an impressively literal interruption.

The child lifted awayvv. 1–6

A woman appears in heaven dressed in the whole firmament: sun for clothing, moon beneath her feet, and twelve stars for a crown. Beside her comes a huge red dragon, furnished with seven heads, ten horns, and seven crowns, and waiting with the grim punctuality of a creature who has chosen the exact moment of birth for its attack. Yet the child is caught up to God and His throne at once, leaving the dragon no confrontation to enjoy. The woman flees into the wilderness, where God has prepared nourishment for 1,260 days.

The dragon loses heavenvv. 7–12

Then heaven becomes a battlefield. Michael and his angels fight the dragon and his angels, and the dragon is not strong enough to keep his place there. He is hurled down to earth with his angels, named plainly as the ancient serpent, the devil, and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world. A loud voice celebrates the arrival of salvation, power, the kingdom of God, and the authority of His Christ, while warning earth and sea that the furious exile knows his time is short. The dragon has lost heaven, but has retained his temper.

The river swallowedvv. 13–17

Once on earth, the dragon pursues the woman. She is given two wings of a great eagle and carried to her wilderness refuge, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time. The serpent then tries water, sending a river from his mouth after her; the earth, unexpectedly lively in the matter, opens its mouth and swallows the torrent. Enraged, the dragon turns toward the rest of her children, those who keep God’s commandments and hold to the testimony of Jesus, and takes up his position on the shore of the sea.

  1. Rev 12:1And a great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed in the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head.

  2. Rev 12:2She was pregnant and crying out in the pain and agony of giving birth.

  3. Rev 12:3Then another sign appeared in heaven: a huge red dragon with seven heads, ten horns, and seven royal crowns on his heads.

  4. Rev 12:4His tail swept a third of the stars from the sky, hurling them to the earth. And the dragon stood before the woman who was about to give birth, ready to devour her child as soon as she gave birth.

  5. Rev 12:5And she gave birth to a son, a male child, who will rule all the nations with an iron scepter. And her child was caught up to God and to His throne.

  6. Rev 12:6And the woman fled into the wilderness, where God had prepared a place for her to be nourished for 1,260 days.

  7. Rev 12:7Then a war broke out in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back.

  9. Rev 12:9And the great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him.

  10. Rev 12:10And I heard a loud voice in heaven saying: “Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God, and the authority of His Christ. For the accuser of our brothers has been thrown down—he who accuses them day and night before our God.

  11. Rev 12:11They have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony. And they did not love their lives so as to shy away from death.

  12. Rev 12:12Therefore rejoice, O heavens, and you who dwell in them! But woe to the earth and the sea; with great fury the devil has come down to you, knowing he has only a short time.”

  13. Rev 12:13And when the dragon saw that he had been thrown to the earth, he pursued the woman who had given birth to the male child.

  14. Rev 12:14But the woman was given two wings of a great eagle to fly from the presence of the serpent to her place in the wilderness, where she was nourished for a time, and times, and half a time.

  15. Rev 12:15Then from his mouth the serpent spewed water like a river to overtake the woman and sweep her away in the torrent.

  16. Rev 12:16But the earth helped the woman and opened its mouth to swallow up the river that the dragon had poured from his mouth.

  17. Rev 12:17And the dragon was enraged at the woman and went to make war with the rest of her children, who keep the commandments of God and hold to the testimony of Jesus. And the dragon stood on the shore of the sea.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
