The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

The priests’ portion is not merely a principle but a remarkably exact parcel of a beast: shoulder, jowls, and stomach, with firstfruits and first wool to follow. Sacred provision, it seems, has a butcher’s precision.

The Levites’ portionvv. 1–8

The whole tribe of Levi receives no portion of land among Israel. Their inheritance is the LORD and the food offerings, from which the priests receive the shoulder, jowls, and stomach of a bull or sheep, as well as firstfruits of grain, new wine, oil, and wool. A Levite may come from any town to the place the LORD chooses and serve there with the others, eating equal portions even if he has money from selling his father’s estate.

What Israel must not imitatevv. 9–14

On entering the land, Israel is not to copy the nations there. The forbidden catalogue is impressively crowded: sacrifice of a son or daughter in the fire, divination, conjury, omens, sorcery, spells, mediums, spiritists, and inquiries of the dead. The nations may listen to conjurers and diviners, but Israel is not permitted to do so and must be blameless before the LORD.

The prophet and the testvv. 15–22

The LORD will raise up a prophet like Moses from among Israel’s brothers, and Israel must listen to him. This reaches back to Horeb, where the people asked not to hear the LORD’s voice or see the great fire lest they die. The prophet will speak the LORD’s words; anyone who refuses them is accountable, while a prophet who invents a message or speaks for other gods must die. The practical test is starkly simple: if the message does not come to pass, it was not spoken by the LORD, and the prophet spoke presumptuously.

  1. Deut 18:1The Levitical priests—indeed the whole tribe of Levi—shall have no portion or inheritance with Israel. They are to eat the food offerings to the LORD; that is their inheritance.

  2. Deut 18:2Although they have no inheritance among their brothers, the LORD is their inheritance, as He promised them.

  3. Deut 18:3This shall be the priests’ share from the people who offer a sacrifice, whether a bull or a sheep: the priests are to be given the shoulder, the jowls, and the stomach.

  4. Deut 18:4You are to give them the firstfruits of your grain, new wine, and oil, and the first wool sheared from your flock.

  5. Deut 18:5For the LORD your God has chosen Levi and his sons out of all your tribes to stand and minister in His name for all time.

  6. Deut 18:6Now if a Levite moves from any town of residence throughout Israel and comes in all earnestness to the place the LORD will choose,

  7. Deut 18:7then he shall serve in the name of the LORD his God like all his fellow Levites who stand there before the LORD.

  8. Deut 18:8They shall eat equal portions, even though he has received money from the sale of his father’s estate.

  9. Deut 18:9When you enter the land that the LORD your God is giving you, do not imitate the detestable ways of the nations there.

  10. Deut 18:10Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in the fire, practices divination or conjury, interprets omens, practices sorcery,

  11. Deut 18:11casts spells, consults a medium or spiritist, or inquires of the dead.

  12. Deut 18:12For whoever does these things is detestable to the LORD. And because of these detestable things, the LORD your God is driving out the nations before you.

  13. Deut 18:13You must be blameless before the LORD your God.

  14. Deut 18:14Though these nations, which you will dispossess, listen to conjurers and diviners, the LORD your God has not permitted you to do so.

  15. Deut 18:15The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your brothers. You must listen to him.

  16. Deut 18:16This is what you asked of the LORD your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly, when you said, “Let us not hear the voice of the LORD our God or see this great fire anymore, so that we will not die!”

  17. Deut 18:17Then the LORD said to me, “They have spoken well.

  18. Deut 18:18I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers. I will put My words in his mouth, and he will tell them everything I command him.

  19. Deut 18:19And I will hold accountable anyone who does not listen to My words that the prophet speaks in My name.

  20. Deut 18:20But if any prophet dares to speak a message in My name that I have not commanded him to speak, or to speak in the name of other gods, that prophet must be put to death.”

  21. Deut 18:21You may ask in your heart, “How can we recognize a message that the LORD has not spoken?”

  22. Deut 18:22When a prophet speaks in the name of the LORD and the message does not come to pass or come true, that is a message the LORD has not spoken. The prophet has spoken presumptuously. Do not be afraid of him.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
