The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

The prophet stands beside God as Ephraim’s watchman, yet every path has a fowler’s snare and hostility has got into God’s own house—a remarkably awkward arrangement for a watchman’s station.

The feast goes elsewherevv. 1–6

Israel’s harvest celebrations are exposed as hired love on the threshing floors, and the very places meant to feed the people will fail them. Ephraim will leave the LORD’s land for Egypt and Assyria, where even food becomes unclean. The appointed feast is left with a splendidly practical question: what, exactly, will anyone do on that day? Egypt gathers the fugitives, Memphis buries them, and thistles take over the silver.

The watchman and the snarevv. 7–10

The days of punishment arrive, and the prophet’s title is greeted with the opposite of honour: fool, insane man. Yet he is Ephraim’s watchman with God, while snares lie along his paths and hostility occupies the house of his God. The people are compared with the days of Gibeah, then with grapes found in wilderness and first figs—briefly, almost tenderly—before they go to Baal-peor and become as detestable as the thing they loved.

Glory taking wingvv. 11–17

Ephraim’s glory flies away like a bird, and the image immediately produces an inventory of absences: no birth, pregnancy, or conception. Children, if raised, will be taken; Tyre supplies the strange green comparison before Ephraim brings out its children for slaughter. At Gilgal, the evil appears in full, and the conclusion is root, fruit, house, love, obedience—all withdrawn or withered. The people are left as wanderers among the nations.

  1. Hos 9:1Do not rejoice, O Israel, with exultation like the nations, for you have played the harlot against your God; you have made love for hire on every threshing floor.

  2. Hos 9:2The threshing floor and winepress will not feed them, and the new wine will fail them.

  3. Hos 9:3They will not remain in the land of the LORD; Ephraim will return to Egypt and eat unclean food in Assyria.

  4. Hos 9:4They will not pour out wine offerings to the LORD, and their sacrifices will not please Him, but will be to them like the bread of mourners; all who eat will be defiled. For their bread will be for themselves; it will not enter the house of the LORD.

  5. Hos 9:5What will you do on the appointed day, on the day of the LORD’s feast?

  6. Hos 9:6For even if they flee destruction, Egypt will gather them and Memphis will bury them. Their precious silver will be taken over by thistles, and thorns will overrun their tents.

  7. Hos 9:7The days of punishment have come; the days of retribution have arrived—let Israel know it. The prophet is called a fool, and the inspired man insane, because of the greatness of your iniquity and hostility.

  8. Hos 9:8The prophet is Ephraim’s watchman, along with my God, yet the snare of the fowler lies on all his paths. Hostility is in the house of his God!

  9. Hos 9:9They have deeply corrupted themselves as in the days of Gibeah; He will remember their guilt; He will punish their sins.

  10. Hos 9:10I found Israel like grapes in the wilderness. I saw your fathers as the firstfruits of the fig tree in its first season. But they went to Baal-peor, and consecrated themselves to Shame; so they became as detestable as the thing they loved.

  11. Hos 9:11Ephraim’s glory will fly away like a bird, with no birth, no pregnancy, and no conception.

  12. Hos 9:12Even if they raise their children, I will bereave them of each one. Yes, woe be to them when I turn away from them!

  13. Hos 9:13I have seen Ephraim, like Tyre, planted in a meadow. But Ephraim will bring out his children for slaughter.

  14. Hos 9:14Give them, O LORD—what will You give? Give them wombs that miscarry and breasts that dry up!

  15. Hos 9:15All their evil appears at Gilgal, for there I hated them. I will drive them from My house for the wickedness of their deeds. I will no longer love them; all their leaders are rebellious.

  16. Hos 9:16Ephraim is struck down; their root is withered; they cannot bear fruit. Even if they bear children, I will slay the darlings of their wombs.

  17. Hos 9:17My God will reject them because they have not obeyed Him; and they shall be wanderers among the nations.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
