Leviticus 21

Every verse links to the people and places named in it, and to the passages readers connect it with.

The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

A priestly descendant with a physical defect may eat the most holy food, yet may not approach the veil or the altar: sanctuary access is barred with remarkable precision, while the holy meal remains his.

The priest and the deadvv. 1–9

The priests are not to defile themselves for the dead, except for their closest family: mother, father, son, daughter, brother, and an unmarried sister near to him. Marriage, hair, beards, bodily cuts, and the choice of wife all come under the same insistence that the priest be holy, because he presents the food offerings. The rule concerning a priest’s daughter is stark: prostitution profanes her father, and the text gives the sentence plainly.

The highest priestvv. 10–15

For the priest highest among his brothers, the boundary tightens sharply. He must not let his hair hang loose, tear his garments, go near any dead body, or defile himself even for his father or mother. He must not leave or desecrate the sanctuary, and the woman he marries must be a virgin from his own people. The ordinary priest may mourn the closest family; the highest priest may not, even when the dead are his parents.

The descendant with a defectvv. 16–24

The second instruction turns from conduct to approach. A descendant of Aaron with a physical defect may not come near to offer the food of God. The list is unflinchingly particular—blind, lame, disfigured, deformed, broken-footed, broken-handed, hunchbacked, a dwarf, an eye defect, a festering rash, scabs, or a crushed testicle. Yet the exclusion stops at offering: he may eat the most holy food and the holy food, though he must not go near the veil or altar. Moses then tells Aaron, his sons, and all the Israelites.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
