Wisdom and Folly shout almost the same invitation from the heights of the city; one has prepared a table, while the other keeps a rather alarming guest list.

Wisdom’s house and counselvv. 1–12

Wisdom has built a house with seven pillars, prepared meat, mixed wine, and set a table—architecture and catering in one brisk opening. Her maidservants call from the heights of the city, inviting the simple inside to eat and leave folly behind. The chapter then turns from the feast to correction: mockers make rebuke dangerous, while wise and righteous people become wiser under instruction. The LORD and the Holy One stand at the beginning of wisdom and understanding, with longer days promised to wisdom and consequences left to the scoffer.

Folly’s house and hidden farevv. 13–18

Then Folly appears, loud, naive, and knowing nothing, seated at the door of her house in the same heights of the city. Her invitation closely resembles Wisdom’s, but her menu is stolen water and secret bread, which she advertises with suspicious confidence. The guests do not know what waits below: the dead are there, in the depths of Sheol. It is an especially poor inn, though the sign outside is cheerful enough.
