Wisdom keeps changing costume: first a woman with treasure in her hands, then a set of peaceful paths, and finally a tree of life for those who embrace her.

Teaching kept closevv. 1–12

The fatherly voice begins with teaching that must not be forgotten, but kept in the heart. Loving devotion and faithfulness are to be worn almost like jewellery, while trust in the LORD is set against the precarious furniture of self-understanding. Wisdom here straightens paths, heals bones, fills barns, and even gives discipline the curious credentials of love.

The lady with the treevv. 13–26

Wisdom now enters as a woman, hands full of long life, riches, and honor. Her paths are pleasant and peaceful, though she is also a tree of life, which is a brisk change of scenery for a person who has just been carrying treasure. The LORD’s own wisdom founded earth, opened the watery depths, and coaxed dew from the clouds; sound judgment and discernment then become a safer companion for the sleeper, whose foot is spared the snare.

Goodness without postponementvv. 27–35

The teaching turns from cosmic architecture to the neighbour next door. Good is not to be withheld when it can be given, and tomorrow is not to be used as a cupboard for provisions already in hand. The neighbour trusts, the violent man is not to be envied, and the LORD’s final sorting is wonderfully compact: friendship for the upright, grace for the humble, honour for the wise, and shame for fools.
