The chapter
What happens here
Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.
A festival breaks out around two unburied corpses: gifts are exchanged, the whole earth celebrates, and then the dead witnesses stand up and leave in a cloud while their enemies watch.
Measured sanctuary, unmeasured courtyardvv. 1–6
John is handed a measuring rod and told to measure the temple, the altar, and the worshipers, while the outer courtyard is left to the nations. The holy city is trampled for 42 months; meanwhile two witnesses in sackcloth prophesy for 1,260 days. They are called two olive trees and two lampstands, and their repertoire is wonderfully severe: fire from the mouth, a closed sky, bloodied waters, and plagues whenever they wish.
The party that lasts three and a half daysvv. 7–13
When the witnesses finish, the beast from the Abyss overpowers and kills them. Their bodies lie in the street of the Great City, figuratively called Sodom and Egypt, the place also associated here with the crucifixion of Jesus. Peoples, tribes, tongues, and nations look on, though the chapter does not explain how such a multitude manages it, and no tomb is allowed. The earth-dwellers celebrate and trade gifts over the bodies because the prophets tormented them. Then the breath of life from God enters the witnesses, they stand, hear “Come up here,” and rise to heaven in a cloud. Their enemies are still watching when the earthquake arrives.
The seventh trumpet and the opened templevv. 14–19
The second woe passes, and the seventh angel sounds. Heaven announces that the kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of the Lord and of His Christ; the twenty-four elders fall on their faces, while the nations rage and judgment, reward, and destruction are named in one breath. Then the temple of God in heaven opens, the ark of His covenant appears, and the scene ends with lightning, thunder, an earthquake, and a great hailstorm—heaven has, as it were, kept some weather for the finale.

Rev 11:1Then I was given a measuring rod like a staff and was told, “Go and measure the temple of God and the altar, and count the number of worshipers there.
Rev 11:2But exclude the courtyard outside the temple. Do not measure it, because it has been given over to the nations, and they will trample the holy city for 42 months.
Rev 11:3And I will empower my two witnesses, and they will prophesy for 1,260 days, clothed in sackcloth.”
Rev 11:4These witnesses are the two olive trees and the two lampstands that stand before the Lord of the earth.
Rev 11:5If anyone wants to harm them, fire proceeds from their mouths and devours their enemies. In this way, anyone who wants to harm them must be killed.
Rev 11:6These witnesses have power to shut the sky so that no rain will fall during the days of their prophecy, and power to turn the waters into blood and to strike the earth with every kind of plague as often as they wish.
Rev 11:7When the two witnesses have finished their testimony, the beast that comes up from the Abyss will wage war with them, and will overpower and kill them.
Rev 11:8Their bodies will lie in the street of the great city—figuratively called Sodom and Egypt—where their Lord was also crucified.
Rev 11:9For three and a half days all peoples and tribes and tongues and nations will view their bodies and will not permit them to be laid in a tomb.
Rev 11:10And those who dwell on the earth will gloat over them and celebrate and send one another gifts, because these two prophets had tormented them.
Rev 11:11But after the three and a half days, the breath of life from God entered the two witnesses, and they stood on their feet, and great fear fell upon those who saw them.
Rev 11:12And the witnesses heard a loud voice from heaven saying, “Come up here.” And they went up to heaven in a cloud as their enemies watched them.
Rev 11:13And in that hour there was a great earthquake, and a tenth of the city collapsed. Seven thousand were killed in the quake, and the rest were terrified and gave glory to the God of heaven.
Rev 11:14The second woe has passed. Behold, the third woe is coming shortly.
Rev 11:15Then the seventh angel sounded his trumpet, and loud voices called out in heaven: “The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ, and He will reign forever and ever.”
Rev 11:16And the twenty-four elders who sit on their thrones before God fell on their faces and worshiped God,
Rev 11:17saying: “We give thanks to You, O Lord God Almighty, the One who is and who was, because You have taken Your great power and have begun to reign.
Rev 11:18The nations were enraged, and Your wrath has come. The time has come to judge the dead and to reward Your servants the prophets, as well as the saints and those who fear Your name, both small and great—and to destroy those who destroy the earth.”
Rev 11:19Then the temple of God in heaven was opened, and the ark of His covenant appeared in His temple. And there were flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder, an earthquake, and a great hailstorm.
