The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

Jair captured villages and called them Havvoth-jair; Nobah captured Kenath and called it Nobah after his own name—a remarkably personal flourish at the end of a chapter about pasture, battle, and land allotment.

Pasture on the eastern sidevv. 1–15

The Reubenites and Gadites, rich in herds and flocks, see that Jazer and Gilead are good country for livestock and ask Moses not to make them cross the Jordan. Moses hears instead the old danger: while their brothers go to war, will they sit still and discourage Israel as their fathers did at Kadesh-barnea and the Valley of Eshcol? The warning grows severe enough to include forty years of wandering and the possibility of leaving the people in the wilderness again. The livestock began the conversation; the wilderness supplies its thunderclap.

The bargain is madevv. 16–32

The Gadites and Reubenites return with a proposal rather more substantial than simply staying home: sheepfolds and fortified cities for their families, armed men marching ahead of Israel, and no return until every Israelite has received an inheritance. Moses accepts the arrangement, but with the plainest possible condition: they must cross the Jordan before the LORD, and if they fail, their sin will find them out. Eleazar, Joshua, and the family leaders are then brought into the matter, and the two tribes repeat their promise to cross into Canaan armed.

The allotment grows, and names begin to wandervv. 33–42

The settlement suddenly widens: Moses gives the Gadites, the Reubenites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh the kingdoms of Sihon and Og, including their cities and surrounding territory. Gad builds fortified cities and sheepfolds; Reuben rebuilds a string of cities, with Nebo and Baal-meon receiving changed names, though the chapter leaves the mechanics of the renaming charmingly in the fog. Then Machir captures Gilead, Jair captures villages and gives them a name drawn from his own, and Nobah does the same with Kenath. Conquest ends not with a census but with a small burst of personal branding.

  1. Num 32:1Now the Reubenites and Gadites, who had very large herds and flocks, surveyed the lands of Jazer and Gilead, and they saw that the region was suitable for livestock.

  2. Num 32:2So the Gadites and Reubenites came to Moses, Eleazar the priest, and the leaders of the congregation, and said,

  3. Num 32:3“Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, Nebo, and Beon,

  4. Num 32:4which the LORD conquered before the congregation of Israel, are suitable for livestock—and your servants have livestock.”

  5. Num 32:5“If we have found favor in your sight,” they said, “let this land be given to your servants as a possession. Do not make us cross the Jordan.”

  6. Num 32:6But Moses asked the Gadites and Reubenites, “Shall your brothers go to war while you sit here?

  7. Num 32:7Why are you discouraging the Israelites from crossing into the land that the LORD has given them?

  8. Num 32:8This is what your fathers did when I sent them from Kadesh-barnea to inspect the land.

  9. Num 32:9For when your fathers went up to the Valley of Eshcol and saw the land, they discouraged the Israelites from entering the land that the LORD had given them.

  10. Num 32:10So the anger of the LORD was kindled that day, and He swore an oath, saying,

  11. Num 32:11‘Because they did not follow Me wholeheartedly, not one of the men twenty years of age or older who came out of Egypt will see the land that I swore to give Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob—

  12. Num 32:12not one except Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite and Joshua son of Nun—because they did follow the LORD wholeheartedly.’

  13. Num 32:13The anger of the LORD burned against Israel, and He made them wander in the wilderness forty years, until the whole generation who had done evil in His sight was gone.

  14. Num 32:14Now behold, you, a brood of sinners, have risen up in place of your fathers to further stoke the burning anger of the LORD against Israel.

  15. Num 32:15For if you turn away from following Him, He will once again leave this people in the wilderness, and you will be the cause of their destruction.”

  16. Num 32:16Then the Gadites and Reubenites approached Moses and said, “We want to build sheepfolds here for our livestock and cities for our little ones.

  17. Num 32:17But we will arm ourselves and be ready to go ahead of the Israelites until we have brought them into their place. Meanwhile, our little ones will remain in the fortified cities for protection from the inhabitants of the land.

  18. Num 32:18We will not return to our homes until every Israelite has taken possession of his inheritance.

  19. Num 32:19Yet we will not have an inheritance with them across the Jordan and beyond, because our inheritance has come to us on the east side of the Jordan.”

  20. Num 32:20Moses replied, “If you will do this—if you will arm yourselves before the LORD for battle,

  21. Num 32:21and if every one of your armed men crosses the Jordan before the LORD, until He has driven His enemies out before Him,

  22. Num 32:22then when the land is subdued before the LORD, you may return and be free of obligation to the LORD and to Israel. And this land will belong to you as a possession before the LORD.

  23. Num 32:23But if you do not do this, you will certainly sin against the LORD—and be assured that your sin will find you out.

  24. Num 32:24Build cities for your little ones and folds for your flocks, but do what you have promised.”

  25. Num 32:25The Gadites and Reubenites said to Moses, “Your servants will do just as our lord commands.

  26. Num 32:26Our children, our wives, our livestock, and all our animals will remain here in the cities of Gilead.

  27. Num 32:27But your servants are equipped for war, and every man will cross over to the battle before the LORD, just as our lord says.”

  28. Num 32:28So Moses gave orders about them to Eleazar the priest, to Joshua son of Nun, and to the family leaders of the tribes of Israel.

  29. Num 32:29And Moses said to them, “If the Gadites and Reubenites cross the Jordan with you, with every man armed for battle before the LORD, and the land is subdued before you, then you are to give them the land of Gilead as a possession.

  30. Num 32:30But if they do not arm themselves and go across with you, then they must accept their possession among you in the land of Canaan.”

  31. Num 32:31The Gadites and Reubenites replied, “As the LORD has spoken to your servants, so we will do.

  32. Num 32:32We will cross over into the land of Canaan armed before the LORD, that we may have our inheritance on this side of the Jordan.”

  33. Num 32:33So Moses gave to the Gadites, to the Reubenites, and to the half-tribe of Manasseh son of Joseph the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan—the land including its cities and the territory surrounding them.

  34. Num 32:34And the Gadites built up Dibon, Ataroth, Aroer,

  35. Num 32:35Atroth-shophan, Jazer, Jogbehah,

  36. Num 32:36Beth-nimrah, and Beth-haran as fortified cities, and they built folds for their flocks.

  37. Num 32:37The Reubenites built up Heshbon, Elealeh, Kiriathaim,

  38. Num 32:38as well as Nebo and Baal-meon (whose names were changed), and Sibmah. And they renamed the cities they rebuilt.

  39. Num 32:39The descendants of Machir son of Manasseh went to Gilead, captured it, and drove out the Amorites who were there.

  40. Num 32:40So Moses gave Gilead to the clan of Machir son of Manasseh, and they settled there.

  41. Num 32:41Jair, a descendant of Manasseh, went and captured their villages and called them Havvoth-jair.

  42. Num 32:42And Nobah went and captured Kenath and its villages and called it Nobah, after his own name.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
