Every verse links to the people and places named in it, and to the passages readers connect it with.

The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

The LORD blots out Israel’s transgressions, then asks Israel to remind Him of them and argue the case.

Called by name, gathered from everywherevv. 1–7

The LORD addresses Jacob and Israel as the people He created and formed, claimed by name and carried safely through water, rivers, fire, and flame. Egypt, Cush, and Seba are offered in exchange for them, because they are precious and honoured. Then the gathering order goes out in every direction: sons from afar, daughters from the ends of the earth, everyone called by His name and made for His glory.

The witnesses who cannot see or hearvv. 8–21

A people with eyes but no sight, and ears but no hearing, are brought before the assembled nations. The LORD asks for witnesses who can establish the former things, while Israel is appointed as the witness and servant who is to consider, believe, and understand. Then the scene shifts towards Babylon: fugitives are sent out, while the old army lies down for good. The LORD refuses to leave the story there, promising a new way through wilderness and water for His chosen people. Even jackals and ostriches get a drink, which is a splendidly unconventional congregation.

A case reopened after the sins are forgottenvv. 22–28

Israel has grown weary of the LORD, though the LORD says He did not weary Israel with offerings or frankincense. The complaint is turned neatly around: Israel brought sins instead, and burdened Him with iniquities. Yet the LORD says He blots out the transgressions and remembers the sins no more—after which comes the invitation to remind Him, argue the matter, and state the case. The final word in the passage is less comfortable: the first father sinned, the spokesmen rebelled, and Jacob and Israel are handed over to disgrace and reproach.

  1. Isa 43:1But now, this is what the LORD says—He who created you, O Jacob, and He who formed you, O Israel: “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; you are Mine!

  2. Isa 43:2When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you go through the rivers, they will not overwhelm you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be scorched; the flames will not set you ablaze.

  3. Isa 43:3For I am the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior; I give Egypt for your ransom, Cush and Seba in your place.

  4. Isa 43:4Because you are precious and honored in My sight, and because I love you, I will give men in exchange for you and nations in place of your life.

  5. Isa 43:5Do not be afraid, for I am with you; I will bring your offspring from the east and gather you from the west.

  6. Isa 43:6I will say to the north, ‘Give them up!’ and to the south, ‘Do not hold them back!’ Bring My sons from afar, and My daughters from the ends of the earth—

  7. Isa 43:7everyone called by My name and created for My glory, whom I have indeed formed and made.”

  8. Isa 43:8Bring out a people who have eyes but are blind, and who have ears but are deaf.

  9. Isa 43:9All the nations gather together and the peoples assemble. Who among them can declare this, and proclaim to us the former things? Let them present their witnesses to vindicate them, so that others may hear and say, “It is true.”

  10. Isa 43:10“You are My witnesses,” declares the LORD, “and My servant whom I have chosen, so that you may consider and believe Me and understand that I am He. Before Me no god was formed, and after Me none will come.

  11. Isa 43:11I, yes I, am the LORD, and there is no Savior but Me.

  12. Isa 43:12I alone decreed and saved and proclaimed—I, and not some foreign god among you. So you are My witnesses,” declares the LORD, “that I am God.

  13. Isa 43:13Even from eternity I am He, and none can deliver out of My hand. When I act, who can reverse it?”

  14. Isa 43:14Thus says the LORD your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: “For your sake, I will send to Babylon and bring them all as fugitives, even the Chaldeans, in the ships in which they rejoice.

  15. Isa 43:15I am the LORD, your Holy One, the Creator of Israel, and your King.”

  16. Isa 43:16Thus says the LORD, who makes a way in the sea and a path through the surging waters,

  17. Isa 43:17who brings out the chariots and horses, the armies and warriors together, to lie down, never to rise again; to be extinguished, snuffed out like a wick:

  18. Isa 43:18“Do not call to mind the former things; pay no attention to the things of old.

  19. Isa 43:19Behold, I am about to do something new; even now it is coming. Do you not see it? Indeed, I will make a way in the wilderness and streams in the desert.

  20. Isa 43:20The beasts of the field will honor Me, the jackals and the ostriches, because I provide water in the wilderness and rivers in the desert, to give drink to My chosen people.

  21. Isa 43:21The people I formed for Myself will declare My praise.

  22. Isa 43:22But you have not called on Me, O Jacob, because you have grown weary of Me, O Israel.

  23. Isa 43:23You have not brought Me sheep for burnt offerings, nor honored Me with your sacrifices. I have not burdened you with offerings, nor wearied you with frankincense.

  24. Isa 43:24You have not bought Me sweet cane with your silver, nor satisfied Me with the fat of your sacrifices. But you have burdened Me with your sins; you have wearied Me with your iniquities.

  25. Isa 43:25I, yes I, am He who blots out your transgressions for My own sake and remembers your sins no more.

  26. Isa 43:26Remind Me, let us argue the matter together. State your case, so that you may be vindicated.

  27. Isa 43:27Your first father sinned, and your spokesmen rebelled against Me.

  28. Isa 43:28So I will disgrace the princes of your sanctuary, and I will devote Jacob to destruction and Israel to reproach.”

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
