The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

The Levites are counted once at thirty, then again at twenty, and their sacred service includes the baking, mixing, and measuring of offerings. The chapter is quite happy to place holiness beside a kitchen bench, while leaving the change in age unexplained.

A kingdom arranged by numbersvv. 1–6

David, old and full of years, installs Solomon as king and then gathers Israel’s leaders, priests, and Levites. Thirty-year-old Levites and upward number 38,000: 24,000 for the house of the LORD, 6,000 as officers and judges, 4,000 as gatekeepers, and 4,000 to praise the LORD with David’s instruments. The great division follows the sons of Levi—Gershon, Kohath, and Merari—which is a splendidly tidy beginning for a list that soon becomes rather less tidy.

The family list develops a wrinklevv. 7–23

The Gershonites begin with Ladan and Shimei, and then Shimei receives two sets of sons. Shelomoth, Haziel, and Haran are called the heads of Ladan’s families; after that come Jahath, Zina, Jeush, and Beriah as the sons of Shimei. Jahath is first and Zizah second, while Jeush and Beriah are folded together because they did not have many sons, receiving a single assignment between them. Kohath’s line names Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel; Merari’s names Mahli and Mushi. Eleazar dies with daughters only, and the sons of Kish marry them—a family arrangement arriving with the briskness of a filing note.

The sacred work becomes wonderfully practicalvv. 24–32

The descendants of Levi are now registered from twenty years of age, rather than thirty, to work in the service of the house of the LORD. David says that the LORD has given Israel rest and will dwell in Jerusalem forever, so the Levites no longer need to carry the tabernacle or its articles. Their duties instead concern the courts, chambers, purification, showbread, flour, wafers, baking, mixing, and measurements, as well as morning and evening praise and regular service at the appointed offerings. The chapter ends with Levites carrying out the responsibilities of the Tent of Meeting and Holy Place under the descendants of Aaron, with worship and kitchen arithmetic sharing the same roster.

  1. 1 Chr 23:1When David was old and full of years, he installed his son Solomon as king over Israel.

  2. 1 Chr 23:2Then he gathered all the leaders of Israel, as well as the priests and Levites.

  3. 1 Chr 23:3The Levites thirty years of age or older were counted, and the total number of men was 38,000.

  4. 1 Chr 23:4“Of these,” said David, “24,000 are to oversee the work of the house of the LORD, 6,000 are to be officers and judges,

  5. 1 Chr 23:54,000 are to be gatekeepers, and 4,000 are to praise the LORD with the instruments I have made for giving praise.”

  6. 1 Chr 23:6Then David divided the Levites into divisions according to the sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.

  7. 1 Chr 23:7The Gershonites: Ladan and Shimei.

  8. 1 Chr 23:8The sons of Ladan: Jehiel the first, Zetham, and Joel—three in all.

  9. 1 Chr 23:9The sons of Shimei: Shelomoth, Haziel, and Haran—three in all. These were the heads of the families of Ladan.

  10. 1 Chr 23:10And the sons of Shimei: Jahath, Zina, Jeush, and Beriah. These were the sons of Shimei—four in all.

  11. 1 Chr 23:11Jahath was the first and Zizah was the second; but Jeush and Beriah did not have many sons, so they were counted as one family and received a single assignment.

  12. 1 Chr 23:12The sons of Kohath: Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel—four in all.

  13. 1 Chr 23:13The sons of Amram: Aaron and Moses. Aaron and his descendants were set apart forever to consecrate the most holy things, to burn incense before the LORD, to minister before Him, and to pronounce blessings in His name forever.

  14. 1 Chr 23:14As for Moses the man of God, his sons were named among the tribe of Levi.

  15. 1 Chr 23:15The sons of Moses: Gershom and Eliezer.

  16. 1 Chr 23:16The descendants of Gershom: Shebuel was the first.

  17. 1 Chr 23:17The descendants of Eliezer: Rehabiah was the first. Eliezer did not have any other sons, but the sons of Rehabiah were very numerous.

  18. 1 Chr 23:18The sons of Izhar: Shelomith was the first.

  19. 1 Chr 23:19The sons of Hebron: Jeriah was the first, Amariah the second, Jahaziel the third, and Jekameam the fourth.

  20. 1 Chr 23:20The sons of Uzziel: Micah was the first and Isshiah the second.

  21. 1 Chr 23:21The sons of Merari: Mahli and Mushi. The sons of Mahli: Eleazar and Kish.

  22. 1 Chr 23:22Eleazar died without having any sons; he had only daughters. Their cousins, the sons of Kish, married them.

  23. 1 Chr 23:23The sons of Mushi: Mahli, Eder, and Jeremoth—three in all.

  24. 1 Chr 23:24These were the descendants of Levi by their families—the heads of families, registered individually by name—those twenty years of age or older who worked in the service of the house of the LORD.

  25. 1 Chr 23:25For David had said, “The LORD, the God of Israel, has given rest to His people and has come to dwell in Jerusalem forever.

  26. 1 Chr 23:26So now the Levites no longer need to carry the tabernacle or any of the articles for its service.”

  27. 1 Chr 23:27For according to the final instructions of David, the Levites twenty years of age or older were counted,

  28. 1 Chr 23:28but their duty was to assist the descendants of Aaron with the service of the house of the LORD, being responsible for the courts and chambers, the purification of all the holy things, and the work of the service of the house of God,

  29. 1 Chr 23:29as well as for the rows of the showbread, the fine flour for the grain offering, the wafers of unleavened bread, the baking, the mixing, and all measurements of quantity and size.

  30. 1 Chr 23:30They were also to stand every morning to give thanks and praise to the LORD, and likewise in the evening.

  31. 1 Chr 23:31Whenever burnt offerings were presented to the LORD on the Sabbaths, New Moons, and appointed feasts, they were to serve regularly before the LORD in the numbers prescribed for them.

  32. 1 Chr 23:32So the Levites were to carry out the responsibilities for the Tent of Meeting and the Holy Place, and, under their brothers the descendants of Aaron, the service of the house of the LORD.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
