The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

Beno appears first as Jaaziah’s son, and then appears again at the head of Jaaziah’s descendants, with Shoham, Zaccur, and Ibri following behind him as though nothing at all unusual had happened.

The lots of the priestsvv. 1–19

Aaron’s four sons begin the chapter, though Nadab and Abihu had died without sons, leaving Eleazar and Ithamar to serve as priests. David, with Zadok and Ahimelech, divides their descendants for service: sixteen family heads from Eleazar and eight from Ithamar. The division is made by lot, and Shemaiah records the names in the presence of the king, the priests, and the Levite heads. The lots proceed in a splendidly orderly little procession, from Jehoiarib first to Maaziah twenty-fourth. The chapter gives both the unequal numbers and the phrase “one family being taken from Eleazar, and then one from Ithamar,” but does not pause to explain how that arrangement keeps step. Their order is for service when they enter the house of the LORD, according to Aaron’s regulations and the command given to him by the LORD, the God of Israel.

The rest of Levivv. 20–31

The chapter then turns from the priestly divisions to the remaining descendants of Levi, moving family by family through Shubael, Jehdeiah, Rehabiah, Isshiah, Shelomoth, Jahath, and the four sons of Hebron: Jeriah, Amariah, Jahaziel, and Jekameam. Micah, Shamir, Isshiah, and Zechariah follow; then Merari’s line brings in Mahli, Mushi, and Jaaziah. Here comes Beno twice: first as Jaaziah’s son, and immediately afterwards among Jaaziah’s descendants. Mahli’s Eleazar had no sons, while Mushi’s sons were Mahli, Eder, and Jerimoth. The chapter closes by giving these Levites the same treatment as the descendants of Aaron: lots cast in David’s presence, with the family heads and their younger brothers alike included.

  1. 1 Chr 24:1These were the divisions of the descendants of Aaron. The sons of Aaron were Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.

  2. 1 Chr 24:2But Nadab and Abihu died before their father did, and they had no sons; so Eleazar and Ithamar served as priests.

  3. 1 Chr 24:3With the help of Eleazar’s descendant Zadok and Ithamar’s descendant Ahimelech, David divided them according to the offices of their service.

  4. 1 Chr 24:4Since more leaders were found among Eleazar’s descendants than those of Ithamar, they were divided accordingly. There were sixteen heads of families from the descendants of Eleazar and eight from the descendants of Ithamar.

  5. 1 Chr 24:5Thus they were divided by lot, for there were officers of the sanctuary and officers of God among both Eleazar’s and Ithamar’s descendants.

  6. 1 Chr 24:6The scribe, Shemaiah son of Nethanel, a Levite, recorded their names in the presence of the king and of the officers: Zadok the priest, Ahimelech son of Abiathar, and the heads of families of the priests and the Levites—one family being taken from Eleazar, and then one from Ithamar.

  7. 1 Chr 24:7The first lot fell to Jehoiarib, the second to Jedaiah,

  8. 1 Chr 24:8the third to Harim, the fourth to Seorim,

  9. 1 Chr 24:9the fifth to Malchijah, the sixth to Mijamin,

  10. 1 Chr 24:10the seventh to Hakkoz, the eighth to Abijah,

  11. 1 Chr 24:11the ninth to Jeshua, the tenth to Shecaniah,

  12. 1 Chr 24:12the eleventh to Eliashib, the twelfth to Jakim,

  13. 1 Chr 24:13the thirteenth to Huppah, the fourteenth to Jeshebeab,

  14. 1 Chr 24:14the fifteenth to Bilgah, the sixteenth to Immer,

  15. 1 Chr 24:15the seventeenth to Hezir, the eighteenth to Happizzez,

  16. 1 Chr 24:16the nineteenth to Pethahiah, the twentieth to Jehezkel,

  17. 1 Chr 24:17the twenty-first to Jachin, the twenty-second to Gamul,

  18. 1 Chr 24:18the twenty-third to Delaiah, and the twenty-fourth to Maaziah.

  19. 1 Chr 24:19This was their appointed order for service when they entered the house of the LORD, according to the regulations prescribed for them by their forefather Aaron, as the LORD, the God of Israel, had commanded him.

  20. 1 Chr 24:20Now these were the rest of the descendants of Levi: From the sons of Amram: Shubael; from the sons of Shubael: Jehdeiah.

  21. 1 Chr 24:21As for Rehabiah, from his sons: The first was Isshiah.

  22. 1 Chr 24:22From the Izharites: Shelomoth; from the sons of Shelomoth: Jahath.

  23. 1 Chr 24:23From the sons of Hebron: Jeriah was the first, Amariah the second, Jahaziel the third, and Jekameam the fourth.

  24. 1 Chr 24:24From the sons of Uzziel: Micah; from the sons of Micah: Shamir.

  25. 1 Chr 24:25The brother of Micah: Isshiah; from the sons of Isshiah: Zechariah.

  26. 1 Chr 24:26The sons of Merari: Mahli and Mushi. The son of Jaaziah: Beno.

  27. 1 Chr 24:27The descendants of Merari from Jaaziah: Beno, Shoham, Zaccur, and Ibri.

  28. 1 Chr 24:28From Mahli: Eleazar, who had no sons.

  29. 1 Chr 24:29From Kish: Jerahmeel the son of Kish.

  30. 1 Chr 24:30And the sons of Mushi: Mahli, Eder, and Jerimoth. These were the sons of the Levites, according to their families.

  31. 1 Chr 24:31As their brothers the descendants of Aaron did, they also cast lots in the presence of King David and of Zadok, Ahimelech, and the heads of the families of the priests and Levites—the family heads and their younger brothers alike.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
