What happens here
Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.
The family tree runs neatly from Abraham to Joseph, then takes an elegant sideways step: Joseph is called Mary’s husband, while Jesus is born of Mary.
A family tree with a few wonderfully conspicuous omissionsvv. 1–17
The chapter begins with Abraham and proceeds father by father through Isaac, Jacob, Judah, Perez, Hezron, Ram, Amminadab, Nahshon, Salmon, Boaz, Obed, Jesse, and David the king. Along the way, Tamar, Rahab, and Ruth are named, while David’s entry delicately says “Uriah’s wife”; the chapter offers no explanation for the change in manner. After David come Solomon, Rehoboam, Abijah, Asa, Jehoshaphat, Joram, Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, Hezekiah, Manasseh, Amon, Josiah, and Jeconiah with his brothers at the exile to Babylon. Then the line continues after the exile through Shealtiel, Zerubbabel, Abiud, Eliakim, Azor, Zadok, Achim, Eliud, Eleazar, Matthan, Jacob, and Joseph. At the final turn, Jacob is the father of Joseph, but Joseph is “the husband of Mary,” and Mary is the one of whom Jesus was born. The chapter then declares three groups of fourteen generations, without pausing to explain precisely how its counting has been arranged—a family tree with the bookkeeping left charmingly just offstage.
Joseph receives the explanation in a dreamvv. 18–25
Mary is pledged to Joseph, but before they come together she is found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. Joseph, described as righteous and unwilling to disgrace her publicly, resolves to divorce her quietly. Then, while he is pondering the matter, an angel of the Lord appears to him in a dream and tells him not to be afraid to embrace Mary as his wife: the child is from the Holy Spirit, and the name Jesus is to be given because he will save his people from their sins. The chapter pairs this with the saying about the virgin, the child, and Immanuel—“God with us”—and then Joseph wakes and does exactly as commanded. He takes Mary as his wife, has no union with her until the birth, and gives the child the name Jesus. A genealogy that stopped short at Joseph has now found its household, its dream, and its name.

Matt 1:1This is the record of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham:
Matt 1:2Abraham was the father of Isaac, Isaac the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers.
Matt 1:3Judah was the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar, Perez the father of Hezron, and Hezron the father of Ram.
Matt 1:4Ram was the father of Amminadab, Amminadab the father of Nahshon, and Nahshon the father of Salmon.
Matt 1:5Salmon was the father of Boaz by Rahab, Boaz the father of Obed by Ruth, Obed the father of Jesse,
Matt 1:6and Jesse the father of David the king. Next: David was the father of Solomon by Uriah’s wife,
Matt 1:7Solomon the father of Rehoboam, Rehoboam the father of Abijah, and Abijah the father of Asa.
Matt 1:8Asa was the father of Jehoshaphat, Jehoshaphat the father of Joram, and Joram the father of Uzziah.
Matt 1:9Uzziah was the father of Jotham, Jotham the father of Ahaz, and Ahaz the father of Hezekiah.
Matt 1:10Hezekiah was the father of Manasseh, Manasseh the father of Amon, Amon the father of Josiah,
Matt 1:11and Josiah the father of Jeconiah and his brothers at the time of the exile to Babylon.
Matt 1:12After the exile to Babylon: Jeconiah was the father of Shealtiel, Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel,
Matt 1:13Zerubbabel the father of Abiud, Abiud the father of Eliakim, and Eliakim the father of Azor.
Matt 1:14Azor was the father of Zadok, Zadok the father of Achim, and Achim the father of Eliud.
Matt 1:15Eliud was the father of Eleazar, Eleazar the father of Matthan, Matthan the father of Jacob,
Matt 1:16and Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.
Matt 1:17In all, then, there were fourteen generations from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Christ.
Matt 1:18This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged in marriage to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit.
Matt 1:19Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and was unwilling to disgrace her publicly, he resolved to divorce her quietly.
Matt 1:20But after he had pondered these things, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to embrace Mary as your wife, for the One conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.
Matt 1:21She will give birth to a Son, and you are to give Him the name Jesus, because He will save His people from their sins.”
Matt 1:22All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet:
Matt 1:23“Behold, the virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call Him Immanuel” (which means, “God with us”).
Matt 1:24When Joseph woke up, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him and embraced Mary as his wife.
Matt 1:25But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a Son. And he gave Him the name Jesus.

Who else the chapter reaches
Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.
Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
