Genesis 10

Every verse links to the people and places named in it, and to the passages readers connect it with.

The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

Peleg is given a name, a brother, and one splendidly unexplained disturbance: in his days the earth was divided.

The families of Japhethvv. 1–5

The chapter opens with Noah’s three sons—Shem, Ham, and Japheth—and then follows Japheth’s line through Gomer and Javan. Their descendants become maritime peoples, separating into territories, languages, clans, and nations. It is a genealogy with a map quietly folded inside it.

Ham’s line and the sudden appearance of Nimrodvv. 6–20

Ham’s descendants spread through Cush, Mizraim, and Canaan. Then Cush’s son Nimrod steps out of the family list and acquires, in two sentences, might, a hunting reputation, a kingdom, several cities, and a proverb. His kingdom begins in Shinar, then reaches Assyria, where Nineveh, Rehoboth-Ir, Calah, and Resen are built. After that splendid interruption, the genealogy resumes its orderly march through the peoples descended from Mizraim and Canaan, whose clans are later scattered and whose borders are carefully drawn.

Shem, Eber, and the divided earthvv. 21–32

Shem’s line is presented as the line of Eber, passing through Arphaxad and Shelah. Eber’s two sons receive rather different treatment: Joktan receives a long procession of descendants and a territory from Mesha to Sephar, while Peleg receives a name explained by a single, arresting sentence. The chapter ends by gathering every branch back under Noah’s sons: clans, languages, lands, nations, and the spreading-out of the nations after the flood.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
