Description

Who was Obed-edom?

In the words of STEPBible TIPNR:

Obed-edom was a Gittite in whose house the Ark of the Covenant stayed for three months after the death of Uzzah (2Sa.6.10-12; 1Ch.13.13-14). When David attempted to bring the Ark to Jerusalem, Uzzah was struck down by God for touching the Ark. Fearful of further divine judgment, David left the Ark in the house of Obed-edom. During its stay, Obed-edom's household was blessed by God (1Ch.13.14). Later, when David brought the Ark to Jerusalem, Obed-edom and his family were appointed as gatekeepers and musicians in the tabernacle (1Ch.15.18, 21, 24; 16.5, 38). Obed-edom had eight sons, all of whom served in the tabernacle (1Ch.26.4-8). He is also mentioned as a Levite in the context of the temple treasuries (2Ch.25.24). Obed-edom's faithfulness and the blessings he received highlight the importance of reverence for the Ark and the presence of God.

Relations

Direct connections

Every entity the graph places in a stated relation with this one, grouped by the kind of link. Each relation is authored once and its inverse derived, so both ends always agree. Rows marked “registry” come from the identity spine rather than from a verse, and a row marked “which bearer is the source’s decision” is one where the name could have meant more than one person. The last group is not a relation at all — it counts the events two entities stand in together.

How the graph connects Obed-edom 10 of 25 entities the graph connects to Obed-edom, in 3 groups: kinship 2, company 1, events 7. Kinship, company and ground are stated relations; events counts the acts two entities stand in together and is not a relation. Each mark is sized by how many verses name that entity and labelled with the link and the count, so the grouping and the size are both readable without colour. Distance from the centre carries nothing.JeduthunChild of · 2 events · 15 versesMattithiahSibling of · 2 events · 5 versesKinshipGathAssociated with · 41 versesCompanyHarp2 events · 38 versesAsaph4 events · 33 versesLyre2 events · 20 versesHeman2 events · 12 versesZechariah3 events · 7 versesBenaiah2 events · 5 versesHosah2 events · 4 versesEventsObed-edom

Places

Where this happens

The places the claims about this person reach, drawn where the gazetteer locates them. A point is where a row puts them and never where tradition does; no line joins two points, because the rows state where and not in what order.

Where the story of Obed-edom happens The one place the claims about Obed-edom reach, on a map of the world the text moves through, framed to them: Gath. Each dot is a coordinate from the gazetteer, sized by how many rows put Obed-edom there. The coastline is a modern one, simplified; no border, road or settlement of any period is drawn, and no line joins two points, because the rows state where and not in what order.Gath

The pattern

Where Obed-edom is named

Every book of the corpus in the order it is read, each as wide as the chapters it holds. A bar is the verses of that book which write the name, and the flat stretches are as much of the answer as the bars.

16 verses across 3 of 66 books; 63 write the name nowhere. Named in 2 Samuel (3), 1 Chronicles (12) and 2 Chronicles (1).

Obed-edom is named in 16 verses, and the name is written 21 times in them — occurrences of the name in the Hebrew or Greek, counted in the versification of the Berean Standard Bible (v5.7). Every book of the corpus is drawn, its width its share of the 1,189 chapters. 63 of the 66 books never write it. A verse that tells of this subject without writing the name is not counted here.
