What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

A tent is pitched for the ark, six Levitical families are summoned, and the grand solution to the previous disaster is gloriously practical: let the Levites carry it on their shoulders, with the poles, as commanded.

A proper arrangement for the arkvv. 1–15

David builds in the City of David and prepares a tent for the ark. He gathers Israel in Jerusalem, assembles the descendants of Aaron and the Levites, and names the chiefs of six Levitical families with their remarkably precise numbers of relatives. David summons Zadok, Abiathar, and the six chiefs, telling them to consecrate themselves and acknowledging that the earlier attempt went badly because the proper order had not been sought. The priests and Levites consecrate themselves, and the Levites carry the ark on their shoulders with its poles. The arrangement is now both solemn and, one hopes, less explosive.

The ark advances with an astonishing amount of musicvv. 16–29

David appoints singers, and the procession acquires harps, lyres, cymbals, trumpets, rams’ horns, a director of music, and guardians for the ark. Heman, Asaph, and Ethan sound the bronze cymbals; others play according to Alamoth and Sheminith, while Chenaniah directs because he is highly skilled. David, the elders, and the commanders go rejoicing from the house of Obed-edom. Because God helps the Levites carrying the ark, seven bulls and seven rams are sacrificed—the number is given with splendid confidence and no explanation. David wears fine linen and a linen ephod, and all Israel brings up the ark with shouting and music. Then, just as the ark enters the City of David, Michal looks down from a window, sees David dancing, and despises him in her heart. The procession has trumpets; the ending has a window.

  1. 1 Chr 15:1David constructed buildings for himself in the City of David, and he prepared a place for the ark of God and pitched a tent for it.

  2. 1 Chr 15:2Then David said, “No one but the Levites may carry the ark of God, because the LORD has chosen them to carry the ark of the LORD and to minister before Him forever.”

  3. 1 Chr 15:3And David assembled all Israel in Jerusalem to bring up the ark of the LORD to the place he had prepared for it.

  4. 1 Chr 15:4Then he gathered together the descendants of Aaron and the Levites:

  5. 1 Chr 15:5From the Kohathites, Uriel the chief and 120 of his relatives;

  6. 1 Chr 15:6from the Merarites, Asaiah the chief and 220 of his relatives;

  7. 1 Chr 15:7from the Gershomites, Joel the chief and 130 of his relatives;

  8. 1 Chr 15:8from the Elizaphanites, Shemaiah the chief and 200 of his relatives;

  9. 1 Chr 15:9from the Hebronites, Eliel the chief and 80 of his relatives;

  10. 1 Chr 15:10and from the Uzzielites, Amminadab the chief and 112 of his relatives.

  11. 1 Chr 15:11David summoned the priests Zadok and Abiathar and the Levites Uriel, Asaiah, Joel, Shemaiah, Eliel, and Amminadab.

  12. 1 Chr 15:12And he said to them, “You are the heads of the Levitical families. You and your relatives must consecrate yourselves so that you may bring the ark of the LORD, the God of Israel, to the place I have prepared for it.

  13. 1 Chr 15:13It was because you Levites were not with us the first time that the LORD our God burst forth in anger against us. For we did not consult Him about the proper order.”

  14. 1 Chr 15:14So the priests and Levites consecrated themselves to bring up the ark of the LORD, the God of Israel.

  15. 1 Chr 15:15And the Levites carried the ark of God on their shoulders with the poles, as Moses had commanded in accordance with the word of the LORD.

  16. 1 Chr 15:16David also told the leaders of the Levites to appoint their relatives as singers to lift up their voices with joy, accompanied by musical instruments—harps, lyres, and cymbals.

  17. 1 Chr 15:17So the Levites appointed Heman son of Joel; from his brothers, Asaph son of Berechiah; from their brothers the Merarites, Ethan son of Kushaiah;

  18. 1 Chr 15:18and with them their brothers next in rank: Zechariah, Jaaziel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, Eliab, Benaiah, Maaseiah, Mattithiah, Eliphelehu, Mikneiah, and the gatekeepers Obed-edom and Jeiel.

  19. 1 Chr 15:19The musicians Heman, Asaph, and Ethan were to sound the bronze cymbals.

  20. 1 Chr 15:20Zechariah, Aziel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, Eliab, Maaseiah, and Benaiah were to play the harps according to Alamoth.

  21. 1 Chr 15:21And Mattithiah, Eliphelehu, Mikneiah, Obed-edom, Jeiel, and Azaziah were to lead the music with lyres according to Sheminith.

  22. 1 Chr 15:22Chenaniah the head Levite was the director of the music because he was highly skilled.

  23. 1 Chr 15:23Berechiah and Elkanah were to be guardians of the ark.

  24. 1 Chr 15:24Shebaniah, Joshaphat, Nethanel, Amasai, Zechariah, Benaiah, and Eliezer—the priests—were to blow the trumpets before the ark of God. Obed-edom and Jehiah were also to be guardians of the ark.

  25. 1 Chr 15:25So David, the elders of Israel, and the commanders of thousands went with rejoicing to bring the ark of the covenant of the LORD from the house of Obed-edom.

  26. 1 Chr 15:26And because God helped the Levites who were carrying the ark of the covenant of the LORD, they sacrificed seven bulls and seven rams.

  27. 1 Chr 15:27Now David was dressed in a robe of fine linen, as were all the Levites who were carrying the ark, as well as the singers and Chenaniah, the director of music for the singers. David also wore a linen ephod.

  28. 1 Chr 15:28So all Israel brought up the ark of the covenant of the LORD with shouting, with the sounding of rams’ horns and trumpets, and with cymbals and the music of harps and lyres.

  29. 1 Chr 15:29As the ark of the covenant of the LORD was entering the City of David, Saul’s daughter Michal looked down from a window and saw King David dancing and celebrating, and she despised him in her heart.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
