Every verse links to the people and places named in it, and to the passages readers connect it with.

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

The Word of life is introduced by a remarkably practical inventory: heard, seen, gazed upon, and touched—after which the writer says the writing is meant to complete a joy.

A life handled and proclaimedvv. 1–4

The writer begins with what was “from the beginning,” but gives it no misty entrance: it has been heard, seen, gazed upon, and touched. This revealed life is proclaimed as eternal life with the Father, so that fellowship may join the hearers to the proclaimers, to the Father, and to Jesus Christ. Then comes the wonderfully personal reason for the letter: joy, apparently, is a thing that can be brought to completion by writing.

Light, darkness, and the peril of innocencevv. 5–10

The message now turns to a stark arrangement: God is light, and darkness has no lodging in Him. Anyone claiming fellowship while walking in darkness is called a liar; anyone claiming to have no sin deceives themselves, and anyone claiming never to have sinned goes further still, making God out to be a liar. Confession, by contrast, meets faithfulness, justice, forgiveness, and cleansing, while walking in the light brings fellowship with one another and cleansing through the blood of Jesus.

  1. 1 John 1:1That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our own eyes, which we have gazed upon and touched with our own hands—this is the Word of life.

  2. 1 John 1:2And this is the life that was revealed; we have seen it and testified to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life that was with the Father and was revealed to us.

  3. 1 John 1:3We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And this fellowship of ours is with the Father and with His Son, Jesus Christ.

  4. 1 John 1:4We write these things so that our joy may be complete.

  5. 1 John 1:5And this is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you: God is light, and in Him there is no darkness at all.

  6. 1 John 1:6If we say we have fellowship with Him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.

  7. 1 John 1:7But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.

  8. 1 John 1:8If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

  9. 1 John 1:9If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

  10. 1 John 1:10If we say we have not sinned, we make Him out to be a liar, and His word is not in us.
