The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

John hears a voice behind him and turns around to see it, which is a perfectly sensible response until the voice turns out to be standing among seven golden lampstands.

The revelation is sent to the churchesvv. 1–8

The revelation begins as a message passed along an unusually well-staffed chain: God gives it to Jesus Christ, Jesus sends his angel, and the angel makes it known to John. John testifies to what he saw, while the seven churches in Asia receive grace and peace from a formidable company, including “the seven spirits before His throne,” who arrive without explanation and are not asked to introduce themselves. Jesus is named the faithful witness, firstborn from the dead, and ruler of the kings of the earth; then the scene opens outward to every eye, all the tribes of the earth, and the Lord God declaring himself the Alpha and the Omega.

The voice, the lampstands, and the swordvv. 9–20

John is on Patmos because of the word of God and his testimony about Jesus. On the Lord’s day he is in the Spirit when a loud voice like a trumpet speaks behind him, and John turns to see the voice—a small grammatical adventure before the spectacle begins. He sees seven golden lampstands and, among them, One like the Son of Man: white-haired, fire-eyed, bronze-footed, with a voice like many waters, seven stars in his right hand, and a sharp double-edged sword coming from his mouth. John falls like a dead man. The figure lays a right hand on him, identifies himself as the Living One who was dead and is alive forever, and explains that the stars are the angels of the seven churches while the lampstands are the churches themselves.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
